Advantages: young, fit, whole life to look forward to

Disadvantages: Can you support a child?

Teenage pregnancy is such a general term. There is a huge different in a 14 year old getting pregnant and a 19 year old mum to be. I personally would come under this term when i had my first (at 16).

I must admit i was not a steryotypical 'teenage mum' as i achieved As and Bs in my highers and have brought up my son together with his father with the most love he could ask for. We have our own mortgage and are both employed.
It saddens me to think that many young mothers are looked down upon or frowned upon without anyone getting to know them. In my experience people can be so cruel. I had a lot of dirty looks and rude remarks throughout my pregnancy and my sons young life including 'You are a fake mother, you are young enough to be his sister' and 'Did you miss the cut off time for abortion?' These comments sickened me and i would not for one second think of an abortion. Personally my pregnancy wasn't planned but i believe my husband and myself handled it maturely and sensibly.

Is lack of sex education to blame?

I'd say no bacause i knew about contraception before i got pregnant. Unfortunetely the antobiotics i was prescribed cancelled out the pill. However, my sex education came primarily from my parents and i remember first learning about it in 4th year of high school - when i was 3 months pregnant! I believe more could be done in schools to educate but also believe it is the parents resposability too.

Are young mums bad mums?

Definetely not. Some young mothers can give a child a better start to life than some older mothers. Eg. A 16 year old who has just completed their exams but is still with the father and they have planned out the future and can give this child love and support. Vs. A 49 year old mother who may beat upon the child or cause neglect.

All in all i truly believe age is no factor in when you should have a baby.As long as you know you can support it and give it all the love he/she may need.

Summary: Young mums can be great mums too!

You are doing really well, well done, it seems you have really suceeded as a young mum and academically , imagine that a young parent with brains - its an outrage , that cant be right, your meant to be the scum of society living off handouts and treating your kids badly whilst using drugs and sleeping around - LOL !!!! Isnt it amazing that in this day and age there are still so many people who actually think that way !! Well Good Luck to you and your family you should be really proud of yourself. XX
