This is something I have been quite shocked about in recent weeks.

As a former member of a not very well liked religion, I always wanted and gave understanding and leeway and always defended the right for a person to believe what they want to believe and practice what they want to practice.

In recent weeks, I have broken with my tradition of not going into chat rooms wo wander in and see what people are saying about these latest attacks in the US. I have seen a strange mixture of Muslims commenting.

Some have absolutely horrified me by defending what happened and saying they too would do the same all in the name of Allah.

Other Muslims have jumped in and told the mad ones that they are a shame to Islam and quoted parts of the Koran which preach peace and say that you cannot kill innocents - women and children and the disabled, and that suicide is a sin.

But what I want to know is that if Islam DOES preach peace (and respect for women!!!!) then why are these things not carried out? Why do the words 'Muslim' and 'Extremist' get put together so frequently? Why, if the Koran says one thing are thousands following a course that is opposite to it? And why on earth do they think that they have Allah's blessing in doing it?

The Taliban make enormous demands on the people of Afghanistan. Is that because they think that they have got it right and that the rest of the more lenient Muslim world are doing it all wrong? And if they think that they are so pious, how can they look after and support the now infamous Bin Laden thinking that they have Allah's blessing when they know full well that he is not specific in his attacks and thinks nothing of killing innocent people?

These and more questions I have attempted to ask Muslim people. There are many things I would like to know about the Muslim faith - what makes them tick? Do they actually believe wholeheartedly what their religion teaches? Or
are they afraid to speak out or leave and just have to carry on? If the Koran is seen to be infallible, why do their members ignore it in such a public way?

Unfortunately, I have never managed to get full honest answers from a Muslim person as to these things. I think that some of the answers could have a bearing on terrorist activities that take place in the name of Islam. I accept that the terrorist element of this religion is a relatively small number, but it does worry me that a greater number of Muslims on the street than I had dared imagine actually agree with what happened. I don't understand.

Let's be fair here - of course these people are twisting religion, as much as the Chrsitians who use their religion as an excuse to kill doctors who perform abortions or who beat up gays.
