Advantages: get rid of bad people
Disadvantages: terrorism
I suppose my earliest memory of terrorism was Yvonne Fletcher, the young PW who was shot by a Libyan Embassy Official and walked out free... Through out my 37 years, I have encountered many situations where terrorism could have affected our lives or just in the general panic that one of my family or friends could have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Take Harrods in the 80's which got bombed by IRA. That day my step brother who lived nearby was going to Harrods to his Christmas Shopping. I will never forget the time and stress that mum and dad had as they could not get through to him in London. Was he there? Had he been hurt? In the end he had decided to out of town shopping and was unaware of the panic that had been caused. Another time, my Wedding Day 15th June 1996. Just around the time we were saying I do, was the exact time that Manchester was bombed by the IRA. I will never forget seeing people running in all directions in panic. They showed a picture of the Manchester Registry Office and people fleeing. This was one of our choices to be married in. This hurt me as I was still a Manchester lass and they had the nerve to hurt our town, but we would survive as a city and bounce right back, bigger and better than ever and the Commonwealth Games in 2002 were held there. So what else has affected me, regarding terrorism, well I live in Warrington and in 1993, the police caught the IRA trying to blow the gasometers up in Warrington and in fact they blew two up and shot a police officer. As a revenge to the people of Warrington on the Saturday before Mothers Day in 1993, they placed bombs outside Boots in the bins, the town was full of shoppers and many of them were children out buying bits and pieces in readiness for that Sunday for their mums. As a result, two innocent children died. The IRA proudly boasted that they were responsible for it and years later The Peace Centre was set up by one of the dads to help rela
tionships from people all over the world. The IRA apologised for this, but they knew deep down what they had done and the lives of two innocent children had been taken away. So this is only a small insight of how terrorism has affected my life, I am lucky I have always been out of the way, but you have to think, do we face it head on and deal with the situation which could provoke things or do we turn the other cheek and let them get away with it. We only have to remember those people in America jumping out of the Twin Towers to their death rather than burning. Could you imagine the panic, the rush of adrennaline, ringing up your loved one saying we have be hit by a plane and I am not going to get out and the building is on fire. Recently there has been the Madrid one to name many of the Terrorism that is currently going on around the world. So What do we do about it? If we let them carry on then innocent people all around the world will suffer and die. Together we have to unite and become one and fight it as a group of nations, not as individual nations. It worries me that Mr Blair sides with USA who in my opinion just wants to get out there and fight without thinking about the consequences which can make us look as though we have egg on our faces. If we are to fight Terrorism, we have to do it as one, not just one country here and there as the impact is not that good. For turning the other cheek, I would say no to this as what right have people to go around bombing places up and killing people. Give people a free hand to do what they want and they will take full advantage of the situation. The prisoners who were detained in Cuba were all shouting and moaning about their rights to this and that and the other. Fair enough if they were not charged with anything, but what about those who were and still detained there. Are they entitled to anything. Well according to the Geneva Convention they are but what
thought did they give to their victims. What goes around comes around accoring to Karma. I am willing for people to be treated fairly and humanley but no luxuries. Suicide bombers are the latest thing in terrorism, what makes them want to do it. Speculation is that it is money orientated and that money will be given to their famillies. Terrorism is a hard subject to talk about and it will go on forever which is really sad and there are 100 different reasons and solutions of how we can deal with it. A lot of people are NIMBYs (Not in my back yard) so they really don't care and do not want to get involved. But the world is our back yard and there is so much space and land that could be enjoyed and benefitted from. Why do people have to kill all the time. You turn on the news and it is all bad, they never seem to report good news. These terrorist ought to get a life themselves and go and enjoy their lives as it is so limited. I know people fight for their beliefs which is not a bad thing in itself but when this starts to turn to violence and terrorism, then it is out of order. What do you all think ? This is a subject that could go on and on and on as there is no easy soloution and whatever or whoever comes up with a soloution there will always be others to dismiss it, so really is it a case of you cannot do right for wrong. - 20/04/04 The trend of suicide bombers is the most frightening as they are prepared to give their own life to kill others. Living in the country we do, it is hard to understand how people can kill others over personal beliefs.
