Advantages: English is a beautiful language
Disadvantages: No one seems to be able to talk properly nowadays
I find the English language to be a wonderful hybrid. Pretty much all other languages out there have come from one or two places but the English language has its influences buried in so many different cultures.
I love how it has evolved over the years into what we today classify as the English Language.
400 years ago the English Language was such a different thing, influenced by writers such as Marlowe and Shakespeare, moving into newwer times when the dictionary came about and new words where added by Chaucer and his writings into modern times where art and culture is still the biggest influence, with words such as 'WAG' now being an actual word even though it was just a phrase coined popularly by a newspaper.
Saying this though I don't think people appreciate the spoken word as they should. I hate people who can not say words properly, like 'innit', it sounds so rude and horrible, like people have reverted back to being in caves and grunting. And a big pet peeve is when people either speak or type in 'text speak', even when I type (which is a much faster way of writing things down) I type the full word so that people know what I am actually trying to say. I am a member of websites such as Facebook and half the time I can not understand what people are talking about because they miss so many letters out of words, 'smne' or 'sm1' does not represent the word 'someone' in my eyes.
Let's give the English Language the respect it deserves by talking and typing it as it should be.
Summary: English Language in all it's beauty

- 16/12/09 Language evolves. Much of the phrases and rules that we use these days are probably made up of abberations that linguistic snobs found irksome at the time. I'll be the first to admit that ignorance in this field can be irritating though. |

- 03/11/09 For me it's the confusion shown between the use of 'less' and 'fewer', one being quantifiable and the other not. Also 'thankyou' written as a single word. Grrr! |
