Advantages: none
Disadvantages: economic destruction
Joining the emu could be the biggest mistake our country could ever make. There are so many good arguments against it, and so few arguments for it I fail to understand the debate, or rather; I do understand the debate too well. In Britain alone there is an enormous diversity in incomes, the south east of the country is an entirely different economy to the north. We in our small country have enough trouble trying to eliminate these problems; even in our country a single interest rate is hard to accept. Yet here we want to sign away our ability to control our economy; there are justifiable arguments to state that within a country there could be different interest rates, yet through some kind of mysticism, or rather egotism, the eu believe that they can find a single rate that will be right for the whole of Europe, this is just economically unviable. The reply to this is to say that members can only join when their business cycles have reached some sort of fantastical synergy. This is quite frankly never going to happen, we cannot control our business cycle reliably or in the short run. To think that we can is bizarre to say the least. When Yugoslavia was actively involved in committing hate race crimes it was not Europe who wanted to step in, it was the personal belief of Tony Blair, that convinced the other European leaders to take action, and even then the Germans would have pulled out at any given opportunity, if we were to become part of emu we would loose a significant portion of this power because as the German financial advisor said on news night, single currency is a step towards a single country, I will not voice the nationalistic xenophobic arguments here, I will simply say that this is lunacy, while the u.s. has an amiable economy and work ethic we in Europe do not. Any American is happy to move from coast to coast for a job, yet few Englishmen are willing to move two hundred miles from south to north. Why then would we suddenly be willing
to take a job in a country many hundreds of miles from home, in a foreign country, where the inhabitants speak a different language? Despite the desire of Politically Correct thugs, we British are disliked throughout the world, we have a long and illustrious history of war and exploitation, there is literally too much history for people to happily up sticks and move to another country. Britain’s economy is at present the most buoyant in Europe, why would we want to compromise our current position by jumping aboard a sinking ship?

- 13/02/01 An opinion about the Euro using "we British are disliked throughout the world", how interesting. I cannot say I agree with opinion and it's incredibly one sided but well done anyway.
I'm not really sure which way I swing in the Euro debate. I feel that an elected european body may be more socially just but I fear that it may lead to an irreversible state of corporate power. |
