Advantages: great sense of national pride, queen's 50th
Disadvantages: knock on effects to exams are great, exspensive to nation
Well, crappy title it may be, but yes, you guessed it, this review will be about the upcoming A, AS and GCSE Examinations coming up this year! Well, from a personal point of view, let me just say one thing, I love this country we live in, I love our history, and I love the fact we have a monarchy, so this is not a particular criticism of them. Righty, so that said, here we go: The Golden Jubilee of the Queen, well, from a personal point of view, it could be the single biggest pain in the buttocks imaginable, it has messed up the exam time table for my A levels, something, which is rarely a good thing, because it plays with the amount of revision time that you expected and what you actually get. Although, the one good thing that has been changed is that one of the English exams, was supposed to give us a weekend to go over the pre released materials, we now have an entire week hehehehe, so it isn?t all bad! There have been several changes in the timetable for the exams, on all levels, whether we are talking about mere GCSEs, which are critical for 16 year olds to be able to actually advance themselves, and to go into further education, and from there to go onto higher education if they choose to. So, looking at it in that perspective, could we really do with the Jubilee being at another period in time, I guess it's just sod's law that 'ol blighty' celebrates our monarchy at such an important part of the educational year. Although this review is an insight into the educational side of the Jubilee, I will wander from that particular beaten path just for a second. We as a nation in my opinion have became distant, at one point we were strong and individual as a nation, our people stuck together, and yes it could be that so called British stiff upper lip idea, but we had great pride in ourselves, and our country, it was worth the wars for so to speak. So, maybe the Jubilee will serve a great purpose in restoring som
e of that pride that once made our nation so great, and maybe it will bring our people together, as there will be parties in the streets, and a time of great pleasure hopefully as people celebrate our monarchy! Anyway, back to education. Indeed I o not resent the actual Jubilee, not in the slightest, but I do think that before the country goes ballistic over it, we need to look at the disruptions it has caused. I also strongly agree with castlebinn (dooyoo member), that the financial losses to the country will be significant, and we do have to ask ourselves that although the Jubilee should be celebrated, just to what extent should we celebrate it? Should the country go overboard, or should we celebrate in moderation, difficult though it may well seem! I leave you to be the judge, jury and executioner on that question.

- 17/03/02 A good point, but I don't think you need worry too much. I have a distinct feeling that the Jubilee will be a bit of a damp squib, if people in my town are in any way typical. |
