Advantages: The Americans like them

Disadvantages: Archaic, holding the nation back, from a time that no longer exists

Members of the jury, I put it to you that Britain is being held back by the monarchy. I purport that the monarchy is one of the strongest contributing factors to a collectively nostalgic feeling amongst the British people. The monarchy is archaic, and so is Britain.

THE CASE FOR THE CROWN

The Queen is our sovereign, our head of state, we look up to her, we look up to the Royal Family with great respect and admiration. Their presence gives us great comfort and strength in times of need. They are ambassadors for Britain, they are symbols of history, they are part of our heritage. Oh, and of course, the Americans just love them!

THE CASE FOR THE FUTURE

The Queen and her family are symbols of everything archaic and out-dated, everything we should be growing away from as a society.

The Royal Family is born into privelege, they are supported by the unpriveleged masses. What has given them this right? They have this right because their ancestors fought battles for power. Their role is redundant, the monarch has little power and we live in a democratic society. This method of achieving power doesn't figure in a democartic society.

How can young people especially, find strength and comfort in a family that they cannot relate to. They will find more relevance in The Simpsons.

Britain is not great anymore. There is such a disillusion that we have a decent quality of life here in Britain, but we are living in the dark ages. All we ever do is complain about new things, we don't understand new technology, we don't like 'modern art', we don't want to see new shaped buildings, we don't want to join together and be part of Eurpoe: we simply don't want this nation to move forward.

This nation is so closed-minded, and it will take a hell of a lot more than getting rid of the monarchy to improve that. We have a deep-seated nationalism that is negative and unproductive. We waste time
whinging about the great triumphs of the past, about winning the war, about the coal miners, ship yards, etc etc, and we won't consider a new way of doing things. We don't provide enough opportunities to learn new skills. We are not educated to be forward thinking.

There is nothing in Britain for those who want a future. A real future. It is only a matter of time before Britain gets left behind the rest of the world. We won't integrate with a bigger power and we don't have the guts to make changes on our own.

The day the monarchy is abolished could mark the beginning of a letting-go of the past, but it will take a much deeper change of thought for Britain to embrace the future.

You raised some good points on both sides of the argument, but I think Britain *is* capable of celebrating the new as well as the old, and off the top of my head I can think of two pieces of modern art which Britain has taken to heart in the last few years - the Angel of the North and the Tate Modern.

Also I'd be interested to hear more of your own opinion of the Jubilee - if we shouldn't be celebrating the monarchy what should we be celebrating? British culture, technology, science, innovation?

A well written op......but I think this is in the wrong place..... the topic is the jubilee not the monarchy's role ( I believe there is another place for this) As for your op... I am scottish /british and proud of it I like living in a democratic nation and I don't want europe to dictate the rules to me thank you very much.... and I believe that you should not forget your roots..... don't throw the baby out with the bath water!!!! I am not particularly a royalist but I respect certain members of it for what they do for britain/organisations.

The royal family have very little power anymore anyhow, so if we take away what little power they have left there is no reason why they can't be kept as a tourist attraction which is more or less what they are now anyhow. The amount they cost the country is fractional compared with what they bring in in tourist dollars anyhow so although i am not a royalist, they are still good to have around.
