The new AS-level system - Pros & Contra

Newest Review: ... be as easy as GCSE ...I was in for a surprise. Luckilly the shock of the january modules knocked me into full swing revision mode. Almost all of my friends tried to breeze through the exams without revision only to find it very difficult. They then went on to blame the idea itself, as did the rest of the country. I am no snob or excellent student but i belive that AS levels give students a basic wide range of knowledge, but require them to get into the rigtht frame of mind. I belive if anyone is to blame its the tutors of the AS system for not getting students into the correct frame of mind and new strategies should be put into place. If... more

AS level students are lazy. The reason students of AS levels find them so hard is because the majority have not got out of the bad GCSE habit of no-revision and no planning. I have just finished my AS-levels and have to admit am the worst culprate for this kind of lazyness.I expected the AS exams to be as easy as GCSE ...I was in for a surprise. Having been in the last year of students who took the old style A-levels you may think I'm counting myself lucky to have avoided the new AS Levels, and the seeming disaster that seems to surround them. Well, in a way I am, but however badly they may have been implemented there are some definite advantages of the new system. The old A-level system was a pretty simple affair when all was said and done. You chose 3 subjects you wanted to do and did them for two years. You could do 4 or 5 A-levels if you so desired, but obviously the more you did the harder it became as you had a higher work load. Some of the subjects were examined by a series of exams after ...  Read the complete review

Let's start with the good points of the AS Levels. I'm not doing them. I'm 20 years old, so I've just finished my 2nd year of University, so I'll never have to worry about AS Levels in my life. Before you scoff and reach for the mouse so that you can leave a comment about how I may one day have children who sit the exams, let me tell you that you're wrong. By the time the next generation are sitting their exams, everyone will have realised what a bad idea this system was. Although I'm not taking the exams myself, I have quite a few friends who are currently in the Lower Sixth Form who are studying for them, so I know quite a lot about them. ...  Read the complete review

Well there has been a lot in the news/media about these new AS levels...so here what I think! I thought i'd give you a run down of the AS levels from one of the "guinea pigs" of this years systems. If, like me, you've known for quite a few years what you would like to do at University, so you've had your A-levels planned for many years, then these AS levels really ruin your plans! Since I was about 12 i've known I wanted to be a vet. So since about 13 i've known i'd do A-level Physics, Chemistry and Biology. But ooooh no. The year I want to start them they introduce the "AS-levels"! [just ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The new AS-level system - Pros & Contra: AS-Level blues... (970 words)

Being 17 years of age and being the first academic school year to try out the new AS-Level system, I can honestly say that the system is a shocker. Just a bit of background information though, the system was introduced so that it would broaden the education of pupils in the 6th form by allowing them to take 4 AS-Levels in the first year, and then in the following year, for the pupil to drop one of the 4 AS-Level subjects and carrying on the remaining 3 subjects to an A2-Level. This compares with the old system where pupils were to take on 3 subjects from the beginning of their 6th form and carry them through until the end of the 2-year course, and then hopefully ...  Read the complete review
