Advantages: If it's good you get a crown
Disadvantages: If it's bad you get a low rating.
Someone very kindly pointed out that I had written the wrong review under this title so I have decided to put what I wrote under the correct title and rewrite this one before I get tonnes of 'Somewhat usefuls'.
In my opinion this is a pretty impossible thing to write about because everybody has their own opinions on what a good dooyoo review is all about. Being a member of the site for a few months now I realise that you just can't please everyone. If you include the product nutritional value then you may get a comment saying there was no need to put that it. If you don't include it then you may get one saying that you should of. It's all down to personal taste and I sometimes wonder why God didn't just make us all the same. Dooyoo would be alot easier that way:)
Lets start with the length of a review. Personally I don't think an exact 150 word review can be good. I don't think you can get in all of the essential details and give a good idea of what the product is about. I think you need to be writing a minimum of approximately 300 words for the review to be of any use at all. I know that people on here differ in opinion about that but I do think that the word count needs to be upped as it would make it a lot harder for people to churn out absolute rubbish.
Personally I don't always use word and it shows in my grammar and punctuation. I know I should and will from this day forth. I can't give this advise if I don't actually do it myself. It can get pretty wearing if you are reading a review that makes no sense at all because there are no full stops, capital letters etc. Fair enough if you are using this site to improve your writing but you arn't going to improve your grammar if you don't know where you are going wrong. Word is really good and will highlight your problems and help you solve them. I especially think this would be very useful to you if English isn't your first language.
I think a review with lots of product statistics is pretty boring. If I read a review with that in it then I will skip past that bit. If I wanted to know exactly what fat content was in a tin of Tesco's peaches then I would look it up myself. You can get that sort f information on web pags that the items are sold on.
What I am really interested in is your personal experience was like of the product you are reviewing. This is the sort of information that isn't given on web sites that are trying to sell it. I want to know things like:
Did it perform as it says it does?
Did it live up to what you were expecting?
Was it as tasty?
Did you and your family get much fun out of it?
What does it taste like?
Was it enjoyable to watch?
Would it be suitable for my 2 year old son?
What are the pluses and the minus'?
As far as crowns go I only have two (for my bulimia and schizophrenia reviews) out of nearly two hundred so I'm pretty baffled as to how you get them. The two that I have got I did work extra hard on. I included the folowing in both of them and this format obviously worked well:
Facts,
My personal experience,
The recovery process,
Help and advise.
I think if you are aiming to get a crown I wouldn't write thousands and thousands of words because I'm pretty sure that this isn't the way to go. I think you need to include every possible bit of information on the thing that you are reviewing, or at least some facts and a good amount on your experience. This seem to work for me but like I have already said I'm no expert.
I hope this helps some of you to get to grips with trying to make your reviews better and happy Dooyooing!
Summary: Heres what I think about how to write a good review.

- 09/01/09 Although I agree in principle that 150 is quite short for a review. It is sometimes preferable to read a concise review of 150 words, rather than painfully wade through one which has been "padded out" just to reach a high minimum word count. So I think Dooyoo have set it, at an appropriate minimum limit. |
