Advantages: Rating should weed out the poor opinions

Disadvantages: Also "weeds out" some excellent opinions which are a bit contaversial

Being a relative newcomer to the dooyoo community, I have been reading lots of opinions to get tips on how to write something which is both informative and interesting at the same time. I have been really surprised by some of the ratings of opinions - and, judging by the comments from other members, I am not alone. Now, I might have got hold of the wrong end of the stick here, but I would have thought a "very useful" or "useful" opinion is one which tells you something pertinent about a product or current topic - no matter whether you agree with it personally. I feel that some members are voting opinions "not useful" simply because they don't agree with the writers personal opinions, particular with regard to emotive subjects like fox hunting and euthenasia.

Surely it would be better to write a comment and not rate the opinion at all - or, to take a deep breath, rate the opinion as useful, then write why you disagree with it. If too many "not useful" ratings are given, simply because the rater doesn't agree with the points raised, then the opinions don't get read. After all, everyone is more likely to read a "useful" opinion. I thought a lot of the n-u opinions were really valid - O.K., some may have been controversial but at least they seemed honest and gave the reader something to think about.I know we all have our individual likes and dislikes - that's what makes dooyoo such a good site because we all get to share our experiences for the benefit of the community. "Not useful" voters have the advantage of remaining anonymous which is good - providing they give an honest rating whether or not they are in agreement. Think before you click.

UPDATE:30.09.00. Since writing this opinion, anonymity for NU ratings has been removed and I have become a little less of a 'newcomer' to the site, having written and read a lot more opinions.

I now feel that there are defi
nitely some members who are rating opinions as NU simply because their own opinions have been similarly rated by the author. I tend not to use the NU button myself if at all possible - after all, 'usefullness' is a very personal thing and what is NU to me could be someone else's VU.I would rather read an opinion and leave it at that.I have also been alarmed by some comments which were nothing less that a personal attack on the writer - surely people can disagree without turning nasty? I will be making a special effort to write comments in future, which brings me to another gripe about dooyoo. Why, oh why, do some members never respond to comments? I find it extremely frustrating to have written a comment like "Do you have an address or telephone number for this company?" to go back to their opinion again and again and find that they haven't bothered to answer.

Once again,dooyoo'ers... think before you click.

I have now gained quite a few people in my COF (for which I'm truly grateful - and amazed). I try very hard to read/rate their opinions but the dilemna for me is when I click onto a members profile and find that they write mainly about football, computer games, motor racing etc. All these are categories in which I wouldn't actually recognise a Very Useful opinion if it jumped up and slapped me in the face. Hence I try and find an opinion that is not on a specialist subject that I don't understand. Besides, as I said in the opinion, what is Not Useful to me (say, for example an opinion on the latest PlayStation) may be very useful to soemone else.

Good points brought to the fore here.
Re: philmar's stance of not rating at all: I believe this to be a negative idea. If an opinion has been read, then it should be rated. Not rating is not helpful to the author for future submissions. If an op is so dire (in the reader's op), say so, explaining why and offering to re-rate if it is revised at any stage.

I agree with everything you've said. I prefer not to rate if I find an opinion which I don't particularly like, as you say if what they have to say is pertinent it is bound to be useful to somebody. I know what you mean about the comments but I do find it difficult to track comments which I've made on particular opinions, I try to check now and again but more often than not forget. Perhaps a discussion or commentary section on the writers profile page may be more useful?
