Like other animals man is territorial. Therefore I can understand that Britain (and most countries) want weapons to defend their territory. Companies are given contracts to develop weapons and obviously they want their product to sell. The problem with the arms trade however, is that some companies have no scruples. My husband used to work for a company that was involved in the defence system. He developed software programmes for aircraft. Anyway, halfway through a project the boundaries suddenly changed. The company didn't seem to care who it sold to. Countries that were known to have human rights abuses, were being sold weaponary. Other parts of the company were producing landmines etc. My sister has visited landmine victims in Cambodia and so we were only too aware of the consequences. Needless to say my husband got out, as fast as he could after he heard more about the companies style of ethics. He felt he could use the skills he has to benefit people. Sadly though there is always someone else who is willing to step into the brink and continue the work. I suppose people have different values in life. Some people see it as a job that feeds my children and keeps a roof over my head...... while others have different moral ethics and want nothing to do with it.
