Advantages: Can be lovely , gives us something to talk about .
Disadvantages: Unpredictible , moving seasons , global warming , drought possible .
The weather is one of those peculiar topics of English conversation . We seem to feel a need to pass comment on it whether it’s hot , dry , wet , windy or any damned thing . In some ways our British weather is predictable by it’s unpredictability , if you see what I mean .
As we grow older we all seem to become obsessed with the weather . It certainly seems to be a popular topic at many bus stops around the country . I used to listen with amusement to old dears complaining it was too hot as soon as one sunny day appeared and likewise too cold at the first slight nip in the air . They would moan continually about too much rain but as soon as it's dry say 'We need some rain for the Gardens' I assume I am getting old as increasingly I find myself saying just these things and cringing as I realise I am doing so .
One thing we all seem to complain about is the ever shifting seasons . Whether it’s because of the damage civilisation and man has done over the years or the earth’s natural progression things are getting somewhat confusing .
Hailstones in July , torrential floods in high summer and mini heat waves around Christmas time are becoming increasingly common . It is playing havoc with the birds and the bees , and their Spring hanky panky . Similarly perennials are flowering far too early and then getting caught out with late frosts .My garden seems to be doing everything in the wrong season at the minute .
When I was very young I loved all the seasons as they all brought some attraction . Spring brought my birthday plus Mum’s , Dad’s and my brothers . The weather was often nippy but was usually bright and sunny . Summer brought the 6 week school holidays with some occasional wet days but more often than not hot and steamy ones . Autumn brought bonfire night and dark cosy nights around the fire with rather chilly weather . Winter brought Christmas and that wonderful white stuff that children love -Snow .
Now contrary to popular belief it did not always snow at Christmas , but I can remember a fair few occasions when it did . I can also remember it snowing now and then in Spring or even at Easter .However on the whole Snow knew it’s place and tried to stick with winter .
Today we have snow at anytime up to about May it seems . It is not usually the deep , crispy and crunchy snow of old . The sort that sometimes would last a fortnight and cause absolute chaos . It may snow for a day or two and then be relatively mild for a week or so , then snow again . There seems to be even less rhyme and reason to British weather than ever before .
Part of England’s charm is it’s eccentric weather patterns which often match it’s citizens quite nicely . However it is becoming strange , and we seem to be losing our temperate climate . As we do so we also run the risk of having such weather extremes that earthquakes , serious heat waves , hurricanes and many other weather phenomenon may become the norm . Now that’s quite scary although I do wonder if we will still stand at the bus stop discussing the weather but maybe saying ‘ Oo did you see Mrs Jones’s house get blown away in that tornado yesterday ‘
Today the 8th of June 2007 has been a lovely warm Summer's day . Mind you 2 days ago it was chilly and we hade to put the central heating back on . Still it gave us something to chat about :)
