The Worst Job in England?

Advantages: Money,Personal triumph

Disadvantages: Media Intrusuio,becoming a scapegoat

Is it the worst job in England?Well yes and no.The job of course has its downside as we all know. The media intrusion to the job is a great deal. And in my opinion so it should be but not in the way that if we lose say one game lets all go guns blazing and blame the manager and have him sacked like they do.At the end of the day its the eleven men that go over the white line that determine the outcome if they don`t perform we don`t win.Yes the manager can take blame sometimes tactically but nine times out of ten its individual mistakes that lose games.

I believe if the manager is a well liked person the media will not come down quite as hard on him.For instance they weren`t terribly hard on Keegan, they did occasionally play him down but nine times out of ten he got away with it because he was always an honest open guy who would say what he felt. The media liked Keegan I believe because he kept no secrets he was honest with what he felt of performances. On the other hand you had Graham Taylor a not so well liked coach who never really had the respect of all the players and was someone that the media all to often ripped into.

Keegan was a motivator not really a tactician. The fact that he was a motivator got him off the hook as well with the media. The fact that people always made the excuse for him that he wasn`t that tactically aware but was one of the best motivators around.Surely at International level though you need more than a motivator you need someone with the tactical now how to break sides down such as the likes of Germany and Italy.

You always have the nations hopes with you as England manager in major tournaments. If your doing well your the hero as Venables was in 96 when we so nearly beat the Germans to get to the final but if things aren`t going well as with Keegan in Euro 2000 people instantly look for scapegoats. As I say not so much in the papers did Keegan get ripped apart but more by these so called pundits such as Alan Hansen an
d Andy Gray who think they could do a better job but if they where put in the same situation I don`t know if they would.Anyone can sit in an arm chair and rip a managers tactics apart but I`d like to see them do it.And most of them have no experience of managing whatsover so who are they to rip them apart?

On the positive side to being an England manager you have the pay.England managers get payed a great deal and compared to club managers don`t ahve as hard life workwise by only having to work with the team say once every couple of months for a game and doing one scouting mission a week. But when it comes to the actual crunch games they do earn their money as the pressure is immense on them to get things right. As a club manager you have say only a few thousand fans watching you intensely and scrutinising your every move as England manager you ahve the whole country watching you thats millions of people so the mental torture Engalnd managers must go through on the bench must be terrifying.

The second advantage is if things do go right you can become a national hero and you can become a well liked person which as stated before can keep the media off your back. Also it gives you a good reputation if you have done a good job as England manager as in the case of Terry Venables. He did in most peoples eyes such a good job last time that everyone would want him as manager again but as reported in last week that chance now has gone with the signing of Sven Goran Eriksson as coach. It must be so self satisfying for a manager to think that he has done so good for his country and so many people think highly of them.It is really the job that marks you out as a coach.Weather your an also ran or a top notch coach.

On the Eriksson term just before I finish,I don`t agree atall.Yes hes a good tactician which is what I believe an England manager should be but the fact that hes foreign instantly losing the respect of some of the players who think "your for
eign who are you to be bossing me about".I think he`s starting with everyone out to get him especially the media, one mistake and hes going to be ripped to pieces for the fact that hes a foreigner but I just hope he can rub some of the magic he has done with Lazio off with England but its going to be tough,no doubting that.

The main problem with managing the England team is one of expectations. England expect to win every time and so are all the more upset if they don't. Anyone who manages England is on a hiding to nothing, they can't win!, if the media leave them alone the fans will get them or vice-versa.
In Scotland we have Craig Brown, who has the personality of a well kept graveyard, he is not a great tactitian or motivator, but the press and the fans do not have the expectation of winning all the time, so when we do it feels great.
