Advantages: No more Dangerous Cyclists, People who know what they do

Disadvantages: None

Ok, now I think that we urgently need a law which forces all people on bikes to pass a driving test!

Why?

Well firstly, I think it is stupid that you can have someone riding on the road, who does not have to have any idea of what the rules of the road are. Ask most bike riders and I expect that they do not know even the various hand signals that you should use when riding your bike.

I am fed up of seeing bike riders go through red lights and ignoring the rules of the road. Personally give them all a licence and number plates and then you can fine them and punish them should they not obey the rules of the road.

Another thing that annoys me is as a person crossing the road, the cars all stop (as you should) and then the bike comes along and ignores the crossing and nearly runs you over! Aarrgh! Very annoying and dangerous.

WHY Not?

Obviously you have the problem that everyone has to pass a test, which no doubt would cost a lot and you would have people breaking the law and ignoring it. However when you think of the lives that could be saved by bike riders knowing and obeying the law then it would be worth it. Also cars have to pay to use the road, so why not bikes.

I am sure some people are going to blame all the problems on the cars, but I have been both a car driver and a bike rider and I know that bikes do cause a problem. Some swerve all over the place, turn without signalling and generally go through red lights and all.

I will say here that I know that not all bike riders are like this and some know what they are doing etc, so I am being quite general here, but it is just my opinion.

Anyway, getting back to the point, bring in a law which forces the bike riders to register and pass a test to ride on the road, so that everyone is safer.

Summary: Bring in Bike Tests

you have presented both sides well enough for me. I dont know there will ever be a law. When I was at school there was a cycling proficiency test. I dont know if it still exists though!

Got e thinking and actually people who tow caravans should take an extra test and it should be so hard that they all fail so we rid the roads of this menace, also lorries should only be allowed in the nearside lane of motorways I'm fed up of them crawling along in the middle lane failing miserably to overtake each other.

Great topic-i think it would force cyclists off the road too and into a park where the dont need to know the highway code. U. I opened a door once and a cyclist breaked and flew over the open door and was injured. that was my fault though
