There ought to be a law about that! |

Advantages: improve parent/child relationships, less street crime, better school performances
Disadvantages: none
I think there should be a law that makes all school age children be in their own homes by 9pm. I would stagger the curfew times so that 14/16 yr olds were in for 9pm, 11/13 yr olds in for 8pm and under 10s in for 7pm. If this was made law it would stop many arguments with wayward teenagers and their parents over what is a suitable time to be in. My 14yr old son insists that 9pm is too early to have to be in and none of his other friends have to be in so early. As you can imagine we have many rows over this but I will not give in. I can relax once my children are all safely inside and I know exactly where they are and what they are doing. If I had my way all children would have to be in once it gets dark but I know this is a little unrealistic now that it is getting towards winter and it is getting dark at around 5pm. With todays society being the way that it is and there being so many paedophiles, junkies and weirdos around the streets aren't safe for kids to be wandering about. Surely if children had a national curfew there would be less street crime. If they aren't out on the streets then they can't be up to mischief can they? Making children be in by a certain time would surely also improve relationships between parents and their children. Many parents complain that they don't spend enough quality time with their children because of work commitmments etc, but part of the problem has to be that kids come in from school, get changed, go out with their friends and don't come home until bedtime. Perhaps if kids were made to come in and go to bed at a decent time instead of being left to do what they want and go to bed when they feel like it, school performances would improve.

- 17/10/02 Although I sympathise with a lot of what you say, I can't justify a VU because it's just not true that there are "so many paedophiles, junkies and weirdos around". The NSPCC is about to begin a major campaign which will point out that 80% of child abuse is committed by family members. |

- 17/10/02 Where I live, gangs of little thugs, some of them only about ten or eleven years old, hang around after dark intimidating people and causing trouble. They can be really frightening and abusive. I'd like to see your law brought in for MY protection as much as the kids themselves! |

- 17/10/02 It'd be nice to stop them throwing fireworks at each other on my road, too. |
