Advantages: some for me i think

Disadvantages: none really

After reading other members 'reviews' on what makes them happy I thought I'd add my bit in case anyone is interested...

(# 1&2)- The reason for my ultimate happiness is MY FAMILY, well my wife and kids anyway... although my kids have helped my hair turn grey before time...
I just simply love it when I spend time with them as there is always something to laugh about, from some silly comment from my wife to an innocent remark from my 6 year old.
I can't help but smile when I see their little faces as they stare at me in awe as I tell them a story... like me being the first man to swim the English channel or the time I
Orbited the moon as my mates Buzz and Neil had a look around on the surface... although my eldest daughter does tend to question my tales as she learns more about history at school...
I mean today I have just watched my 6 year old daughter singing at a nativity play, seeing her having so much fun really makes one happy to be a father.

(# 3)- Other things that make me happy are SOME of my work colleagues, (and I do mean some...).
I tend to spend most of my time travelling from place to place where work is concerned but when I do land back at camp for a quick brew some of the lads are a blessing in disguise, (before I head off home). Sometimes, after a stressful day, arguing with some little jumped up suit thinking his two minutes at UNI gives him the edge over many years experience on the job it is great to chat with some real life people who simply want to 'chill out', and that's what some of the lads at the office represent...(although some others are not so 'chilled' as they tend to be more the 'Yes men' type).

So we have covered my family and work... both seeming to make me happy in totally different ways of course...(although some people may believe me slightly strange as to be happy at work..???)

But there are other matters that make me happy and they are...

(# 4)- Cooking... yes I know that sounds a little bit lame but I can relax in the kitchen when I'm 'creating' as they say... I tend to enjoy being alone along side my hob with some pans bubbling away and an odd looking object roasting in the oven... my kitchen is my sanctuary away from my job, (as, for my sins, I do a bit of work from home).

(# 5)- Also, I feel happy when I'm out walking my rather mad border-collie, either alone or as a family. Sam, as he is called, tends to have one strange personality, changing from day to day, and is always a laugh a minute with his bizarre ways.... Certainly brings a smile to my face as we stroll along the nearby fields.

(# 6)- Weekends away at my little cottage in the Lakes District also make me happy, (and before you ask, I am far from rich, I just happened to have inherited a small dwelling near Bowness-on-Windermere and go there as often as I can). It is so relaxing after a hard week, or sometimes a hard month, just to leave my worries behind and maybe climb one or two fells whilst I'm there with my Wife, my kids and Sam... total happiness with no outside worries...

(# 7)- Then there is my old fashioned bad habit of drinking either a nice pint of ice cold lager/bitter or even a nice glass of wine with a meal... It is nice to relax with a friendly face and a nice drink, brushing all those troubles out of your head, if only for a brief time.

(# 8)- Birthday/Christmas celebrations always make me happy, especially as it brings my family together into one place to have a good time. They are good happy times, especially my kids birthdays, watching as they unwrap their presents, feeling a special inner glow as they reveal their new gift, usually with a delightful expression on their faces... so for that fact alone Christmas is a really happy time for me, (but not for my bank balance of course...?)

(# 9)- Another things that makes me happy is a good dollop of comical entertainment from that little box things in my lounge that all my furniture is pointing at... yes the television... and I know it also sounds very lame indeed but at my age I do sometimes prefer to stay in on a Saturday night with the wife watching some good entertaining television. With the kids safely tucked up in their beds snoring away, it is nice to relax and watch some good humour on the box...(although there does seem to be a lot less good viewing being broadcast now-a-days, it all seems to be reality trash, which does not make me happy at all). Bring back proper entertainment please.

(#10)- The last on my list for making me happy has got to be Charity work... I try to do what I can, mainly for a few local charities but I also try and do my bit for others as well.
Years ago I was really into doing anything I could do to get that few extra quid for a good cause, from para-gliding to cross country running, even the odd parachute jump when the opportunity came along... but now-a-days my life has become a lot more hectic and my charity work has taken a bit of a hit, in fact, the last thing I did was a sponsored climb over 'Mam Tor' to raise money for the childrens ward for my local hospital... although I do have a couple of Direct debits from my bank account going to some very worthwhile causes.
But the knowledge that even a small donation is going to help someone somewhere really does make me feel happy that I have maybe made a difference.

Well, that's ten things that make me happy, although not in any particular order at all, apart from the first one of course as my family are what makes me me...

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed it... and remember, giving a little helps a lot....

Summary: Happiness comes to us all in the end....

We go to the Fayrer Garden Hotel near Bowness when we can afford it - lovely part of the world isn't it? Susan
