Advantages: Just sharing thoughts.
Disadvantages: Some are too private to share !
This seems to have been a challenge started by Malu, and I thought I would join in.
Q: when did you join dooyoo?
I joined Dooyoo a couple of years ago, though didn't really thing of my membership as being a regular thing until earlier this year, when things started to get busier around the site.
Q: how did you discover dooyoo?
I was recommended by a an old guide on the site and thought “Why not ?”.
Q: why did you join?
I had enjoyed my experience of Ciao and wanted to compare the two sites to see which was the best. It was a strange adventure, as Ciao is very different in layout to Dooyoo, and much more community spirited, although Dooyoo do pay better. There were all kinds of reasons really. Having a time in my life where I was afforded more time online than most people I know, it seemed like too good an opportunity to miss, although at the time, I had high hopes for potential earnings online, and joined many sites in an attempt to boost a flagging income.
Q: what was your very first opinion on?
I don't actually remember this without looking at my page. Ah yes, I had forgotten about that. I was enthused by the use of Kazaah at the time for downloading. Pretty new to the internet there seemed so many things out there that were new and interesting to me, and I made the mistake of thinking that they were new and interesting to others as well, and probably enthused a little too much for my own good about downloading which is and always has been illegal. It was only being reminded of right and wrong by a dooyoo member that I actually changed my activities and found more satisfaction buying CD's than I ever did copying them from online. Not only this, but I have a 56K connection, so even though I downloaded a song, it took about 3 hours for one song in the end, and I decided it wasn't worth the hassle, plus surfing the net and reading and writing was pretty impossible with the downloader running in the background.
Q. did you find it easy to get the hang of dooyoo?
To be honest, yes I found navigation of the site pretty difficult and still do to a certain extent. Wish I could find an archive for the older reviews, wish that I could get my head around the alerts system, but gave up in the end, and just read people that read me. Wish perhaps that the site were not so green, but not much you can do about that. Wish we had guestbooks so we didn't have to feel forced to leave our messages for people on another site, or in threads of conversation that seem rife in comments on reviews.
Q. Did you read other opinions before you posted your first one?
No, to be truth I didn't read much at all, because I was too busy with ciao, although I soon learned the importance of having an equal amount of reads to the amount of reading that I do. Otherwise its too much take and not enough give. Wish I had read more when I first came on the site and gotten a feel for the site, but I have rectified that now, and can see the subtle differences between the expectations of dooyoo readers and the readership on ciao.
Q: Do you write no/some/many comments?
I go through different phases. I used to comment everywhere on ciao, and gradually learned how frowned upon it was and even read a conversation in a guestbook about myself trying to earn points from comments, and it hurt my feelings, because basically I am a communicative kind of person, and if I did leave comments, did so because I found the review itself commentworthy. Here on Dooyoo, I leave less comment than I ever did on ciao because I have already read most of the reviews and commented as I saw fit on ciao and it seems pointless to comment again, when the writer already knows my thoughts.
Q: When you click on the list of Newest Reviews, do you read your friends' opinions no
matter what they're on/according to subject no matter who has written on it/preferably the
opinions of new writers?
Actually unlike ciao, I rarely read from the Newest Reviews list. It doesn't come into the picture for me at all. Perhaps its because I am less familiar with the site, and find the members page a bit of a blank place, rather than one that makes much sense to me. I usually start to read those that have read me, and then jump to people that have read them, etc. etc., and read in this manner for hours on Dooyoo, not really avoiding much in the way of subject matter except perhaps football in which I have very little interest..
Q: Do you write your opinions in one sitting?
Yes, usually, although there are occasions when I need to give more thought to my reviews, like my Bible one. It had to be right and took me days of soul searching before I actually got around to the finished product review, which I believe to be a reasonable review on a relatively difficult subject.
.
Q: How often do you post a new opinion?
Actually there is no rhythm to writing reviews, just post em as and when I have one to offer, so perhaps two in the space of a couple of days and then nothing for months.
Q. Do you use a spell check?
I rarely use a spell check, as the one on my computer is actually american.
Q: Do you think you can improve your chances to get a crown if you suck up to a guide?
Thats a tricky question and I like to believe that sucking up to a guide would have no bearing on whether I get a crown or not, because they are meant to be neutral. However, that said, I believe that if certain people don't want you to get a crown you won't, and how they actually achieve this is to give you lousy ratings. Their problem really and I don't mind being uncrowned.
Q: Are you a member of a forum or a chat room?
Yes, I am the admin of a forum for ciao members which is bright blue, very welcoming, and a place that I can unwind and have a laugh, as well as perhaps help other people to enjoy a little space online where it doesn't matter who you are, or how new or how old a writer you may be. Its personalities that stand out more than any kind of status which suits me fine.
Q: Does it get to you when members praise or condemn you?
I often feel that condemnation of any member is pointless. On an online site, who knows who I am or where I come from, what experiences I have had etc., and given those conditions, who has the right to condemn anyone on an online site ? Personally I feel that condemnation of anyone is destructive and unecessary.
As for praise, well we could all do with it from time to time, but its not worth anything unless we do something to merit it.
Q: What did you do in your spare time before you joined dooyoo?
I still have spare time, and this month am writing for the NANUWRIMO which means writing a whole novel in a month. I am almost there, and its actually quite a buzz of an adventure to be given a deadline that actually spurs you on to complete your story.
Q: What do you wish for the future?
Thats a little bit of a strange question. I wish that people online would remember that we are all human beings, and treat people with the respect they would like shown towards them. It isn't going to happen, but it would be nice if people treated everyone online with a kind of politeness one would expect to receive oneself.
Then perhaps our online lives could be as peaceful and rewarding as our offline ones.
Rachel
Summary: Dooyoo from my point of view.

- 27/11/05 I don't know what it's about or what it's meant to achieve, Rachel, but it's not offering any tips or guides to Dooyoo for recruiting new members. I know what the originator thinks of the placement, but in this case, she's wrong as the Internet Guide at the time told her it was OT and as the current Internet Guide has confirmed by commenting below. |

- 26/11/05 Some interesting responses there, Rachel, but sadly the entire thing is off-topic and doesn't deal with the topic at hand (and neither did any of the other entries to the questionnaire, to be fair). I do disagree with some of your answers - Dooyoo is as community-minded as Ciao, except it's not constantly rammed down your throat and the Dooyoo community, by and large, tends to be more mature than that on Ciao which to me seems rather selfish and thrives on fancy toys and chatting rather than debate and writing here on Dooyoo (which I obviously prefer). It also tends to be a lot less hypocritical and, for the most part, it practises what it preaches - something the Ciao Community rarely manages. |
