Advantages: Gives us a lot of experience, in what to look for when viewing a property

Disadvantages: Never trust an owner of the property

I would like you dooyooers to know my experience of buying a flat.

When I came into this country, I couldn’t afford to have my own place. So my brother offered me his place until we could afford one. And yes we took the offer. That was really generous of him and guess what? He didn’t even charge us any rent. I am telling you the truth, this is no lie.

This gave us a chance to save up for our property. At the same time we had started hunting for a house or flat. I looked in the local newspaper under the home section. And to my surprise the prices of a standard house was way out of imagination. I can understand that we live in a city area and have to try and buy a place nearby. The reason being, my parents look after my son who is 5. I know, you must be thinking ‘how convenient!’ Yes I have to admit that I didn’t have to pay for babysitting either. I am very lucky.

Anyway we saw this flat of 1 bedroom for £83,000 last November. It was newly decorated and perfect for us. We made an offer and everything went well until one day we received a letter from the estate agent saying the owner betrayed them and us. What he did was sell the property to someone else who had offered him £90,000. What can I say?

We were really upset about this. It took us long time to find another one that we liked. That was a flat with one bedroom again fully decorated. The owner worked for one of the channels called Animal Horizon- well something like that. He was really friendly when went to see the flat. As we entered the flat, to my amazement, WOW. This was even better than the previous one we liked. The living room was average size. It had nice studio lights, fully decorated. Bedroom looked a bit cramped as it had a cupboard and baby crib. Then we enter the bathroom, it was very clean, studio lights, nice big mirror. You could have your tea there if you wanted. That’s how nice the bathroom
was. You probably think I am going over the top. But believe me this owner designed it all by himself. Then came the kitchen. Nice loads of fitted cupboard, washing machine and dishwasher fitted.

Ok enough explanation of the flat. We definitely liked the flat. There was no doubt for a second. But inside somewhere in the corner of my heart, I had this fear ‘what if something goes wrong with this one? We decided to go ahead for this.

But wait a minute! When it came to have the flat checked out by the mortgage provider, they discovered that there was no lease document. Great! Just great!

By this time I had given up on looking for flats.

After a good few months, our estate agent rang up and said that there was one flat with 2 bedroom. This time we did not get excited at all. Went to see the flat. Nice flat said to myself. But due to previous experience, I didn’t say anything until my husband told me that he really loves the flat. And he wishes that he could buy it. So we told the estate agent.

And guess what? No no, we were lucky the third time. Everything went well and we are now the proud owners of a 2 bedroom flat.

I just would like to tell you all dooyooers that never give up. No matter what it is. There is always a hope!
