Advantages: all the artists maybe?
Disadvantages: none really
My three great loves in life are football, women and music, although not necessarily in that order. If I am ever doing anything inside, you can bet there will be some music playing, usually radiohead or the Manics. I mainly listen to rock music, but other styles are there to see in my tastes; I like a small amount of rap/hip-hop and also I love 60’s music. Well, enough chat, on to my list, enjoy! 10) Alanis Morissette I fell in love with this lady’s music around 4 years ago when I was given ‘Jagged little pill’ for Christmas. It is a brilliant album on which every song stirs me every time I hear them. Alanis has a thrilling voice and an excellent range of notes, plus her songs are meaningful and many relate well to real life. Her second album, ‘Supposed former infatuation junkie’ is very mellow and sullen, it has some good songs on it but unless you are listening attentively it can sometimes seem as if the songs blend into each other. It is not breathtaking like ‘Jagged little pill’ but is still good easy listening. 9) U2 The greatest band ever to come out of Ireland, are led by a brilliant vocalist, and possibly the coolest man on the planet, Bono. U2 have been going strong for many years now and have consistently produced great songs. Although their new work is not as good as the early stuff they did, it is still proving popular with lots of people, myself included. I like U2 because they are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in, and are not just another band who are only in it to make money. They really care about their music and have produced some brilliant songs over the years, notably One, Sunday bloody Sunday and Where the streets have no name. The Joshua tree was one of the best albums of the 80’s and is many people’s favourite. This band show no signs of slowing down and I hope they continues to produce excellent music. 8) Led Zepplin I borrowed the
'Remasters' album from my friend a while ago and it has made this band one of my favs of all time (hence them being on this list). Their use of guitars is phenomenal and they are so inventive in their music. Aside from that they are also brilliant musicians and Jimmay Page has a great voice. Some of their best songs are 'Whole lotta love' (think top of the pops theme), 'Kashmir', 'Dazed and confused' and of course the immense 'Stariway to heaven', in my opinion the greatest guitar song of all time. 7) Oasis OK, these lads may be pricks, but they did produce some brilliant music in the 90’s, though they have begun to dwindle in the last 2 or 3 years. Their first two albums were brilliant, with Definitely Maybe one of the greatest debut albums ever. ‘What’s the story…’ speaks for itself, and also has a prime position in my CD pile. It is one of my favourite ‘non-rock’ albums and nearly every song is brilliant. Liam and Noel may not be the soundest two individuals on the planet, but they certainly do have some musical talent, no matter how deeply it is hidden, and I think more people should open their eyes to their early albums. 6) Guns ‘n’ Roses Guns ‘n’ Roses definitely are one of the greatest rock bands ever. They emerged in the 80’s as an extremely talented group. Slash is a master on the guitar and Axl Rose is an excellent vocalist, his whiny singing voice complements the style of their songs perfectly. Their album ‘Appetite for destruction’ has become one of the greatest selling albums of all time and is regarded by many people as one of the greatest rock albums of all time. It is certainly in my top ten albums list. Highlights of their work include ‘Paradise city’, ‘Mr Brownstone’, ‘Sweet child o’ mine’ and an excellent cover version of ‘Cat’s in the cradle
’. I heard recently that slash and Axl have not spoken to each other in five years and it is a great shame that this great band had to split because of personal differences. 5) The Beatles Surprising, some might say, to find this group in among Radiohead, Guns ‘n’ Roses and the Manics in my list but I felt I had to put them in simply because of how successful they were. But don’t get me wrong, I like their music, I just think, that apart from John Lennon, they were not exactly the most musically talented guys. However, together they were a good mix and produced some of the greatest songs of all time, my favourite being ‘Let it be’. Lennon and McCartney’s lyrics and vocals are timeless and their true quality can be found in songs like Yesterday, Hey Jude and Let it be. 4) The Manic Street Preachers (there used to be writing here but it was crap so i deleted it) 3) Nirvana My favourite non-British band of all time is this trio of extremely talented musicians. Kurt Cobain was nothing short of genius and I’m very sad he took his took his own life and cut short this band’s reign as the best band in the world at that time. Kris Novoselic is a great guitarist and Dave Grohl is in my opinion one of the best if not the best drummer ever. He was so energetic and pacy, and his drum solos were what made ‘Smells like teen spirit’ such a great song. Cobain himself was a great guitarist too and one of the best songwriters ever. Some of the songs these guys produced are truly breathtaking, ‘Polly’, ‘Pennyroyal tea’, and ‘All apologies’, being just a few. Until recently I had only heard ‘Nevermind’ but last month I got ‘In utero’ and ‘Live and unplugged in New York’, which I think is the best of the three. It is a brilliant live acoustic album, with some excellent songs on it, notably a brilliant cover
of David Bowie’s ‘The man who sold the world’ and Kurt doing a solo version of ‘Pennyroyal tea’. Kurt’s death was dropped on his fans like a bombshell and rocked the music world. It’s sad that such a brilliant musician was taken from this world so prematurely. 1=) Queen Queen are undoubtedly one of the greatest bands ever, as well as one of the greatest British bands of all time. When writing this opinion I couldn’t decide who was the better, Queen or Radiohead, and it would have been unfair to separate them at the top of my list, so I put them joint top. All four men in queen were brilliant musicians, notably Brian May and of course, Freddie Mercury. May was an outstanding guitarist who’s solos are instantly recognisable, but Freddie Mercury was the man who really made this band what they are. A brilliant front man, my favourite (only just beating Thom Yorke), and an excellent pianist, vocalist and all-round entertainer. Queen’s songs were good but it was Freddie’s singing and his performances which made nearly all of them classics. Freddie loved his music and it is a great shame that, like so many others in the showbiz world, his brilliance was cut short so devastatingly by AIDS. I’m sure that if he had lived on he would have produced much more excellent music. Queen were always pioneers in the music world, never afraid to try new things in their work, which is typified by Bohemian Rhapsody. Who else could have combined rock and opera to create, in my opinion, the greatest song of all time? Also, for that song, Queen produced what is credited as the first ever video for a song, showing how influential they have been on the music industry. Every song they made could easily be called a classic but if I had to pick some of the best it would be ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (of course), ‘Heaven for everyone’ and ‘I’m going slightly mad’. The
video for that song is the last time Freddie appeared on camera before his untimely death, and he leaves a message to his fans at the end, by whispering a line from the song; “I still love you”. 1=) Radiohead I have written another opinion simply on this great band, who have been the most influential and groundbreaking British band of the 90’s, and now the ‘noughties’. I will not go into great detail about this band in this op because if you have bothered to read this far (and I thank you if you have) you will be getting pretty tired. This band, led by the brilliant Thom Yorke, produced two of the greatest ever albums in the 90s, ‘The bends’ and ‘OK computer’, both of which are so good it is hard to describe them, and I cannot think of any superlatives which are worthy of describing these pieces of genius. The latter is my favourite album of all time and the first is not far behind it. I recommend anyone who has not heard either of these to do yourself a favour and introduce your ears to some of the greatest songs ever recorded, such as ‘Exit music (for a film)’, ‘Lucky’ and of course, the brilliant ‘Paranoid Android’. Only the most patient of non-fans will be prepared to listen to Kid A enough times to be able to appreciate its brilliance, but again I strongly recommend it.
