was looking through my Top Ten Songs op a few days ago, when I realised that I had left out some of the best, and indeed my favourite, songs ever. I’ll probably change it soon. What I’m trying to say is that these type of lists are very hard to do, and when you couple this with my being more fickle than a big pile of fickleness, you get something that will change every 2 - 3 minutes. Bon appetit.

10. Talking Heads

The masters of avant garde pop. David Byrne is surely the lyricist of the eighties, a great singer and your typically mad art student. He did seem to use the band as a vehicle to promote himself, and it was that type of behaviour that lead to him leaving the band.

The music was always catchy and the lyrics clever, The Sunday Times recently described them perfectly, ’They were too clever for most, and not clever enough for some.
Best Song: Psycho Killer

9. Blur

I never liked their Britpop period; apart from the odd single it was mostly just anonymous pop. But that changed with their album Blur, they grew up and started to play some proper rock music. But even that didn’t prepare me for the brilliance of 13. It was the fruition of a period when Damon broke up with Justine from Elastica. It is a tortured and poignant record, a far cry from the Fluffiness of Country House. If recent single Music is My Radar is anything to go by, Blur are carrying on in the right direction.
Best Song: Swamp Song

8. Fun Lovin’ Criminals

New York’s finest. You may have seen them on the new Miller ad, which they only did because they like beer. That’s principles for you.

They burst on to the scene a few years ago with the single Scooby Snacks, a catchy song about taking some valium and thinking you can do anything That’s what they’re about, catchy songs with funny stories, and what’s wrong with that? They can of course produce some tender mom
ents, they have a great guitar player and vocalist in Huey, and their new record Loco is one of the best of the year.
Best Song: There Was A Time

7. Primal Scream

Their album Screamadelica is one of the records of the nineties, it’s a mellow and melodic venture into electronica, and has produced amazing songs such as Loaded and Movin’ On Up. They belong in my top ten for that record alone, but fortunately for us, their latest album Xtrmntr is brilliant too. It’s a long way from Screamadelica musically wise though, it was recently featured in Q magazine’s Top 50 heaviest albums of all time.

Best Song: Loaded

6. Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan is one of the greatest musicians that I have had the pleasure to listen to. Bob Dylan is a great lyricist and songwriter. Bob Dylan is not however, a poet. Those who think Dylan is a greater poet than Keats are an embarrassment to Dylan fans, for that is going too far.

He’s one of the most important musical figures ever, bringing folk rock to the masses and inspiring some of the other musical greats. He’s managed to produce great music for forty years, and apart from a few poor albums in the eighties, he’s consistently made great albums. And I get to see him play this summer Has anyone out there in the land of Dooyoo seen him play? If so, what was he like?
Best Song: Mr Tambourine Man

5. R.E.M

Their new album, among other things, have put R.E.M back into the minds of the public. Reveal is a more tuneful offering from the guys after the not so well received Up and New Adventures In Hi- Fi. They’ve given us some amazing songs over the years, and some classic albums as well. About every second person has some sort of access to Automatic For the People, Out of Time or Monster.

And they have great taste, Michael Stipe once said that Radiohead were so good it was scary. They’ve also received their fair
share of celebrity praise, with Bono saying R.E.M’s new album was so good it made him feel ill. At least I think it was a compliment….
Best Song: Nightswimming

4. Manic Street Preachers

A band I’ve only recently gotten into. I bought This Is My Truth….,The Holy Bible and Generation Terrorists at the same time, and my God are they good.
They’ve always been a controversial and outspoken band, their albums tackle problems such as anorexia. It’s dark and sorrowful music, but it never threatens to become too much, the classic riffs and strained vocals are compelling listening.

They’re last album wasn’t well received, and there is talk of them packing it in soon, so it remains to be seen what will happen.
Best Song: Motorcycle Emptiness

3. The Beatles

It took the Beatles about six proper years to change music forever, not bad when you consider that it took Radiohead almost four years to get Kid A out. The bands under this are perhaps the only current bands to have a line up that can even come anywhere near these.
From the early pop songs like Love Me Do to the epic Hey Jude, The Beatles have made music that will be around forever. They still inspire countless musicians, some have even made their careers out of trying to sound like them (Oasis anyone?).

They’ve become more popular than ever before with the release of 1, an album which although comes with 27 number ones, it never comes close to the magic of a proper Beatles album. That’s how special they were.
Best Song: A Day In the Life

2. U2

How did a band this big ever fit into Ireland? U2 given us more fun than any other band, they had a forty foot lemon on the Zooropa tour for God’s sake.

Big is better. Although we’d all love to go see U2 in a small intimate venue, Mexico City just appeals to me. Whether knocking out those anthems or experimen
ting with the electronic album Zooropa, the music’s always been fantastic.

They’ve gotten a new lease of life with their new album, it’s more scaled down and soulful. Perhaps they’re getting a bit too old to be arseing around on a huge stage, could break their hips or something.

They’ve had two classic albums in The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, and countless classic songs, not least the ones from the new album. And I’m going to Slane to see them play live,Hooray for me (and Shane Cahill)!!!!
Best Song: One

1. Radiohead

The most important band in the world at the moment. They’ve become what the Beatles were like in the sixties, their new albums are waited for with huge anticipation, with the critics eager to punch holes in them.

Their musical diversions of late haven’t been too much to the critics liking. You have to see where the band are coming from, after three pure guitar albums they had become bored. They then grew musically, learning new instruments and techniques. And somehow this has been viewed as being a bad thing.

Anyway, they’re the most talented band around today, and they’re showing no signs of stopping.
Best Song: Paranoid Android

Another interesting list. Good to see Talking Heads get a mention, although I'm sure Morrissey would have something to say about you saying David Byrne was the best lyricist of the 80s. Shame also that you had to include both the Manics and Radiohead, the most overrated bands of the last decade.
