Advantages: 10 fantastic books (I think)
Disadvantages: Some of them will be a bit tough for some
These are ten books (in no particular order) that I would recommend that you read. Some of them may be really difficult and will take a commitment to read. 1. The Divine Comedy by Dante. An epic that tells of Dante's journey through hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio) and finally of his stay in heaven (Paradisio). It is a difficult story to read, but is an immensely rewarding and exquisitely beautiful work. Not for those with a short attention span. 2. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The book that inspired the film Blade Runner. If you are expecting the film in book format, then read the reviews on this site first. 3. The Aeneid by Virgil. Another epic, telling of the Trojan's journey from Troy to Italy. It takes place after the sacking of Troy. This (along with Homer's Iliad) IS Greek mythology. (Yes, I know that Virgil was Italian). 4. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Read the reviews on this site. 5. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. A wonderfully written, hilariously funny book. If you're a bloke, you have to read this. 6. Don Quixote by Cervantes. 7. The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. 8. The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. 9. 1984 by George Orwell. A view of the frightening view of the future and one of the classics. 10. A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley. A slightly different view of the future. Less famous than "1984" but just as good.

- 04/08/00 Nothing wrong with tough! I first read Don Quixote long before I should, aged about nine or ten, I was long into adulthood before I realised there was no donkey called oaty! (True, honestly!) :-) |
