Advantages: Great books

Disadvantages: None

There's nothing like getting into a book that you just can't put down. These ten books do just that for me.

10) If this is a man by Primo Levi
Many people won't have heard of this book. It's an autobiography of Primo Levi's life during the 2nd world war when he was sent to a concentration camp. He goes into great detail of the conditions they were kept in and what they went through and it is quite moving in some places.

9)Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
This is about two men in the thirties in America. One is tall, strong but a little on the slow side; the other is quite small but clever. They travel about working on farms, getting through life by talking about their dream of owning their own farm.
A simple but enjoyable plot.

8) Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
In short this is about two people (Cathy and Heathcliff), who grow up together and fall in love. It is very well written and a great read.

7) The Chrysalids by John Wyndham
This is about a community which is cut off from the rest of the world. The chances of having normal children, animals or crops etc are very slim and deviations are destroyed. It's an original book, well described and interesting.

6) The Witches by Roald Dhal
This tells the story of a witch's plan to get rid of all the children in the world. It is very imaginative and a great read.

5) I am David by Anne Holm
This book is about a boy who escapes from a concentration camp during the 2nd world war. He knows nothing about his family or even hiself. The book tells the story of his journey trying to find out who he is.

4) Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
This is about the life of an orphan girl, who tries to find respect and true love. A cleverly written novel.

3)Animal Farm by George Orwell
This is a very cleverly written book about a farm of animals who rebel against the cruel treatment of their owner and t
ry to take charge of the farm themselves.
It's a satire of communist Russia and so the plot closely parallels some of the main events of the Russian revolution.
This makes it a great read for both children and adults.

2) A Midsummer Night's Dream by W Shakespeare
As I'm sure you know, this is a very complicated story about four lovers so I won't even try to explain who loves who. However, it is very funny and enjoyable to read.

1)Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K.Rowling
I'm probably wasting my time explaining the plot so I'll just keep it simple. This book is first in a series and in my opinion the best out of the first four. It's about a boy called Harry who finds about that he is a wizard. He joins a wizarding scool called Hogwarts where he faces mamny challenges. This book is full of twists and is very exciting, original and unpredictable.

I certainly manage to put down If This Is A Man quite a few times each time I read it. Usually because I can't take any more. It's still one of my favourite books though.
