I have watched so many films throughout my time that I am going to find it incredibly difficult to think of just ten which I have enjoyed the most. There have been a lot of good films made to say the least, but it is going to take something special to reach the jesika_jay top ten films of all time...!

10.Desperately Seeking Susan
This film, starring Madonna, was made in the late 80’s and features one of Madonnna’s hits ‘Into the Groove’ as its title tune. Madonna plays Susan, a wild dancer who has a reputation for being wild and out of control. She then goes missing for a while. Meanwhile a boed housewife comes across Susan’s jacket, puts it on out of curiosity, and is mistaken for Susan, who a lot of people are after for various reasons. The housewife ends up in a lot of sticky situations due to people being convinced that she is this Susan character. She eventually goes along with it and lands herself a life completely the opposite of her own, without her husband knowing a thing...until the end. Susan eventually finds out about this woman, leading to some bizarre events...

9.Overboard
Some of these older Goldie Hawn films are really great! I’m quite a big fan of hers and must’ve watched ’Overboard’ about a million times now and I still love it! The general plot of the film is that Goldie comes from this very rich snobby family and is a complete bitch to everyone because she thinks she’s so important. Then one day, on a boat trip, she falls overboard and ends up on a shore, unconscious. She loses her memory and is tricked into thinking that she is this guy’s wife and that she has three kids. This is a guy she had met earlier on and been a bitch to as he was poor. She eventually comes round to the idea that she is his wife and brings up the children as her own. She falls in love with the man, who is also in love with her. Then one day, her rich relatives find her living in th
is shack with this man and tell her of her true identity. They make her go with them. She doesn’t speak to her “family” for a while, but in the end it turns out a happy ending- of course- and the two of them get properly married and live happily ever after. The end.

8.Memphis Belle
This has always been one of my favourites since I was quite little. I first saw it on television years back and I remember it being the first film that made me cry. It is a wartime film based around the second World War and focuses on two best friends who are soldiers in the American army. I can’t quite remember their names but one of them falls in love with this girl who is working at a restaurant nearby and before you know it, they are married and she is pregnant. He then has to go off to war over to Germany in a fighter jet. The story focuses around their mission to bomb the targets and return safely home. There are a lot of goings on along the way, a lot of people are killed, but the Memphis Belle reaches its targets and eventually is one of only a few to return home. This film is captivating from the word go, and is a real tear-jerker, but the ending turns out to be a happy one.

7.Boys Don’t Cry
This is a rather disturbing drama about a girl who is convinced that she is a boy. The film is set in Texas. Hilary Swank plays this lead role and is absolutely stunning as this role. She has a boyish face, and dresses in boys clothes. She enjoys pretending that she is a boy, going to clubs and pulling girls. She gets herself into a lot of danger doing what she does, but she continues to do it and ends up talking to a girl in a backstreet pub, ending up in a fight with a rather rough looking man over her. She ends up meeting a whole group of people through this encounter and hits the road with them. They introduce her to to a girl who she falls in love with. They all still think Swank is a boy and accept them into their oddball family w
ho are a group of criminals who get into all kinds of trouble, and they learn of her (or his) love for the girl. Basically, the girl thinks it odd that Swank does not want to have sex with her and becomes suspicious. One day, they catch Swank in her ‘girl form’ and this leads to some horrific consequences for her. This ends as an extremely violent and disturbing scenes which some may find to terrible to watch, but it is gripping and exciting and one that stuck in my mind for ages!

6.Thelma and Louise
This is much the same genre of film as Bonnie and Clyde and it is also just as good! This road movie, made in 199, is all about two best friends who set off on a weekend adventure leaving their abusive lout of a husband and estranged boyfriend behind. They set off on their travels carefree, just planning to have a good time. However, when they stop for a drink at a pub on the way, Thelma is nearly raped by a drunken man. Louise comes to the rescue, holding a gun at him. He releases Thelma and they start to walk away. But then the man shouts out to Louise “suck my dick!”. This being a true feminist movie, this pushes Louise over her limits and she shoots him.
The pair are then on the run. They have no money due to the fact that it is stolen by a cowboy (Brad Pitt) who Thelma stupidly leaves alone with the money. This leads to more crimes; they robs stores at gunpoint, steal all sorts to keep themselves going. They even blow up a man’s truck for shouting obscenities at them.
Basically, by the end of the film, they become trapped by the police and are in such deep trouble that they see no other way out but to keep on driving... off the edge of the Grand Canyon.
Geena Davies and Susan Sarrandon star perfectly in this spectacular movie.

5. and 4. American Pie’s 1 and 2
These are two great films which are both as hilarious as each other and are great for those times when you want to watch something li
ght hearted. The lead character, Jim, gets himself into some hilarious situations in both movies which I have watched over and over again! The second film has many of the same jokes as the first, but is set on the beach when the gang decide to have a summer get together after a year of being apart at college. These films are great because they kept all of the same characters in both films as they recognised a good thing when they created one. These films will have you in stiches every time you watch them. Don’t be put off by them being just more tacky American teen comedies- they aren‘t! Ok, so it is American, it does involve teens and it is (most certainly) a comedy, but they are both superb high quality films which deserve top marks!

3.The Shawshank Redemption
A fantastic film set in an American prison. It is about a man who is wrongly imprisoned for life. It is about his quest to escape the prison. This story has a fantastic and original plot; it will have you gripped from the start. This is no ordinary escape; this escape plan lasts for 20 years out of the 40 that he is supposed to be in for. I won’t tell you how he escapes because that would spoil the film for you if you haven’t already seen it. All I can tell you is that it is full of surprises and will not be what you expect! This film is well researched and shows the reality of prison life. It is emotionally involving whilst being disturbingly violent at times. This is one of those films that you watch and that sticks in the back of your mind for ages! Watch it and see!

2.Bonnie and Clyde
I had to study this one as part of my film studies degree programme. I am not really into old films much and was a bit sceptical about his one as I thought it would be in black and white. To my surprise, it was made in 1967 and was in full colour! Yey! I think everyone knows the story of Bonnie and Clyde, but just incase there is anyone out there who doesn’t, basically
, Bonnie and Clyde are two criminals who fall in love at the beginning of the film and crave excitement and fortune. Clyde Barrel is a bank robber who has just come out of prison who meets Bonnie Parker, a bored girl with nothing to do. Soon their crimes become serious when Clyde accidentally kills a man. They become more and more wanted as they continue to go on the run with Clyde’s brother and wife, and a friend they met along their travels (the Barrel Gang). This is a terrific film with Faye Dunnaway and Warren Beaty giving smashing performances as the leading roles. They are also both pleasing to the eye which might make it more interesting to watch and might explain why so many people became attached to them .
The only bad part of the film is the ending. Although this was a true story and this is just how they came to their end, it is horrible to watch and really sad! Bonnie and Clyde’s friend CJ takes them to meet his father, who pretends to like them and takes them into his home. One day, he tricks Clyde into helping him fix his truck at the side of the road when he sees the pair driving past. Suddenly, a load of men jump out of the bushes and start shooting the two of them to death. This is an extremely bloody and gory scene and it brings the film to a shockingly abrupt ending.
This is definitely worth watching if you have not already done so; it is a classic and you will most probably enjoy it!

1.High Fidelity
Quite a recent film (released in summer 2000) this is a hilarious and warm comedy which was incredibly under rated at the time of it’s release. While it received nothing but positive praise, it did not receive much recognition considering what a top quality film this is.
It stars John Cusack as the leading role and is basically a story about his love life and the different girls he has dated. It sounds a bit boring from that short statement, but it most definitely is not! I suppose this is a romantic comedy
, but it is in no way soppy and really is a film for all tastes.
This film also stars Jack Black, Lisa Bonet and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Jack Black is superb as Cusack’s best friend and record store owner. The film is centralised around this small record store as both best friends are totally obsessed by music. A brilliant, original film which contains quality acting throughout from all cast members.
My absolute favourite!!

Nice op, Jess... but a couple of chick movies in there likely to bring me out in a rash. ;) Love Shawshank, even though its a film that we don't watch that often (stays with you for ages though, doesn't it?). Watched High Fidelity a week ago... top movie, so much better than expected. Jack Black was born to play Barry!

Regards, Jason.

Good op although a bit girly for me!! American Pies were fun but would probably not feature on any list compiled in a couple of years time! Shawshank is on my list - as for your favourite - read the book!!

I believe you've seen Overboard a million times - it's on BBC1 every other week isn't it?!

Yes - Hilary Swank is top rate in Boys Don't Cry. Very powerful film.

Shawshank - top drawer, and High Fidelity is decent enough but doesn't come close to doing the book justice.
