1) Elton John - Someone saved my life tonight
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Never released as a single. On the Captain Fantanstic and the brown dirt cowboy album, In 1975. I am a massive Elton John fan and this is my favourit song by him. Such a emotional song about a true night.
And someone saved my life tonight sugar bear
You almost had your hooks in me didn't you dear
You nearly had me roped and tied
Altar-bound, hypnotized
Sweet freedom whispered in my ear
The song is a true story about the night before Elton was supposed to marry a woman. he knew he was gay and never loved this woman. Elton tried to gas himself in an oven, and his best friend and songwriter saved him just in time.
2) Prefab Sprout - When love breaks down
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was first intoduced to prefab sprout by my father. At first i didn't really like them. But the more and more i listened the more i liked. This is one of my favourite songs by them. The bands made up of Patrick Joseph McAloon, from Durham born June 7, 1957. Martin McAloon,from Durham born January 4, 1962. Wendy Smith, from Middlesbrough born May 31, 1963. and Neil Conti, from Luton born February 12, 1959.
When love breaks down
The lies we tell,
They only serve to fool ourselves,
When love breaks down
The things you do
To stop the truth from hurting you
The song is a personal song about personal experiances with relationships. First released on the 9th November 1985, it only made it to number 25 but stayed in the top 40 for 10 weeks.
3) Richard marx - Hazard
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is not a well known song. Off the album Rush Street released in 1991. This is a great song about a young boys friendship with a girl who goes missing and is found dead. It is a true story of a missing girl name mary. Harzard is infact a town in Nebraska, USA.. The video to the song has two differnet versions of the murder and a who dunnit theme.
My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven
Even then the folks in town said with prejudiced eyes
That boy's not right
Three years ago when I came to know Mary
First time that someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies
And saw the man inside
We used to walk down by the river
She loved to watch the sun go down
We used to walk along the river
And dream our way out of this town
Richard Marx is a Chicago native born in 1963.
4)Fleetwood mac - Go your own way
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The ultimate break-up song. It is rumoured to be about the the feelings Lindsey Buckingham had revolving around the ending of his relationship with fellow band member and romantic partner at the time, Stevie Nicks.
Loving you
Isn't the right thing to do
How can I ever change things
That I feel
If I could
Maybe I'd give you my world
How can I
When you won't take it from me

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of Madonna' s Best, during her reinvention time or at least one of them. From the true blue album, Open Your Heart knocks down the doors of your mind with its driving beat. First in the charts on the 13th december 1986 and made it to number 4. It stayed in the top 40 for 9 weeks.
I see you on the street and you walk on by
You make me wanna hang my head down and cry
My desire burning inside of me
For something I want don't try to resist me
6) Travis - Re-Offender
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's strange to think that when Travis first appeared with their Good Feeling album, That critics dismisssed them as being a take-off of radiohead. This has proved to be untrue. The scottish based band are fastly becoming my favourite band of the decade. This song is my favourite. The song is about being trapped in a violent relationship which alot of people these days can relate to.
But I'm fooling myself
I'm fooling myself
Cause you say you love me
And then you do it again, you do it again
You say your sorry's
And then you do it again, you do it again
The song was first a hit on 11th October 2003 and went to number 7 in the charts and stayed in the top 40 for 4 weeks. Band members include singer/songwriter Francis Healy, guitarist Andy Dunlop, drummer Neil Primrose, and bassist Dougie Payne.
7) Phil Collins - Paradise
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is my all time favourite Phil Collins. It sombre and mellow and quite a sad story. basically the song is about how ignorant people are in this day and age. We see something that makes us uncomfortable and we avoid it.
He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there
Philip David Charles Collins born the 30th januray 1951, In Chiswick , London. The former drummer of genisis had never had a number one with the band. But had many solo number ones. This song went to number 7 on the 4th November 1989, and stayed in the top 40 for 9 weeks.
8) Carly Simon - You're so Vain
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few people will laygh at me for this choice but it my favourite Kareoke song. I love singing this when i've had a few too many on a friday night in the local pub. i was first introduced to the song from the film How to lose a guy in 10 days, which happens to be my favourite film too. Carly refuses to reviel who the man she is talking about in the song is. The song describes a wealthy, handsome man who jets around the world and romances countless women. He seems to value his own reflection in the mirror more than he values any woman. Like alot of men i know.
You're so vain
You probably think this song is about you
You're so vain
I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't you?
Carly born June 25, 1945,in New York, NY. To a very musical family, Her Sister was a famous Broadway playwright. Her father co-founded the Simon and Schuster publishing company. The song went to number 3 on the 16th December 1972 and stayed in the top 40 for 14 weeks.
9) Bon Jovi - LIvin' on a prayer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A classic rock song. Taken from the slippery when wet album. It is one of them songs that you have to have on full blast in your car whilst singing away at the chorus.
Whoa, we're half way there
Whoa, livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Whoa, livin' on a prayer
Born John Francis Bongiovi on the 2nd of March 1962, In Sayreville, New Jersey. The acoustical performance of "Livin' On A Prayer" and "Wanted Dead or Alive" that Jon and Richie Sambora performed at the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards is acknowledged as being the greenlight for MTV's "Unplugged" series. The Song got to number 4 on the 25th October 1986 and stayed in the top 40 for 15 weeks.
10) Elton John - Tiny Dancer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes i know i've already had one Elton song but this is greatest songs not artists. Although i love Elton and have done since i was a wee child, I hadn't properly heard this song until i watched the film Almost Famous. Since then it stuck in my mind, and i even have my children singing it. Taken from the ablum Madman Across The Water.
Hold me closer tiny dancer
Count the headlights on the highway
Lay me down in sheets of linen
you had a busy day today
Unfortunatley the song never made it into the top 40 it peaked at number 41. Which is not good as it is a classic tune. It entered the top 100 on the 3rd of April 1972 and stayed there for 7 weeks.
Well there you have it my top 10 songs.
Hope you've enjoyed reading them as much as i enjoyed writting them.
