Advantages: I can actually decide which songs I like the best - I didn't think I could
Disadvantages: A lot of people won't agree
Here are my top tunes - so hard to do this.
Friday I'm in love - The Cure
who has not listened to this song when in love, no matter what the day and felt great?! It's a great song, so happy, love the riffs and the harmonies make me think of sun-soaked beaches and people in love.
Woman - John Lennon
This is such a romantic song and so simple.
"Woman I know you understand
The little child inside the man,
Please remember my life is in your hands,
And woman hold me close to your heart,
However, distant don't keep us apart,
After all it is written in the stars"
It reminds me that men and women are often at odds with each other and although sometimes men don't mean to upset us, they still do. This song has reduced me to tears after a few drinks when I've imagined someone singing it to me!
Town Called Malice - The Jam
This is a total classic. It's really poetic as well:
"And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk
Bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
Its enough to make you stop believing when tears come
Fast and furious
In a town called malice."
you can forget the poetry when you hear it and shout along to the chorus, but this is what makes it such a great song.
Fairytale of New York - the Pogues and Kirsty McColl
OK, I know this must appear a lot in the top tens of this site, but for good reason. I love the video as well, the smoke and the drinking, it just makes me think of a lock in, in a pub in Ireland. Brilliant vocals, brilliant solos on the instruments, and an absolute refreshing change from the usual Christmas drivel - I never get sick of it.
The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve
I liked this song when it first came out, but it wasn't until I found out what it was actually above that (again) it drove me to tears after a few drinks. It's absolutely beautiful, and the line "I know I'll see your face again" still puts a lump in my throat, with no drink involved!
Creep - Radiohead
I suppose everyone has experienced unrequited love at some stage, and what it's like to put someone on a pedestal. Especially if your self esteem is rubbish and you just want to cry over the hopelessness of it all. This is great angst music - turn it up loud, listen to the beautiful intro, the way it climaxes until you want to shout along "I'M A CREEP!! I'M A WEIRDO!" - just don't worry what the neighbours think, and you'll feel an awful lot better afterwards.
God Only Knows - the Beach Boys
I love the beginning of this song, and the fact it's lyrics are honest enough to say "I may not always love you" - we've all experienced moments of doubt and anger in relationships, but this song is still heartfelt, beautiful and very romantic, especially the line "the world could show nothing to me, so what good would living do me".
Morning Afterglow - Electrasy
I heard this song when I was a teenager and had been really upset at the way a couple of guys had treated me. This song gave me faith that guys actually had feelings too, and that they could wake up with someone and realise that it wasn't all just about one night - "now's not the time to go , I feel the morning afterglow". I love the end of it as well.
My First, my last, my Everything - Barry White
Barry is a legend - there is only one voice like his. I love all his songs, but this one is the one that really lifts me up. Especially when I heard that originally it was meant to be "my first, my last my in-between" - but Barry himself changed the lyrics! Quality. It's just such a happy tune.
Piano Man - Billy Joel
This is a great story-telling song, poignant and familiar - you feel like you know the pub he's talking about and have met people in your local that he could be talking about - people with unfulfilled dreams and ambitions that are escaping the harshness of reality for a while. And it's great to sing along to after a few pints!
- oh I have so many more songs, but these are the ones that I felt passionate about!
Summary: Worth doing this, definitely!
