Advantages: Music is life
Disadvantages: some music is rubbish
This took me a long time to put together, it is fairly accurate, but I may need to change it yet. I believe wholeheartedly that music is the food of life. It is necessary and beneficial for all occasions and it evokes powerful memories. So this is my list of songs that I have danced to , relaxed to and sat in quiet contemplation about the world to, most of these songs remind me of different times in my life and all the great people I have met along the way.
At ten "Turn your lights down low" Bob Marley and Lauryn Hill. I first got into Bob Marley nusic in Amsterdam and at 3am one morning this was the sweetest thing that could have been given to my ears; good times
At nine is Massive Attack's Unfinished Symphony. This is a fantastic piece of music that I can never quite play loud enough. I can't quite remember when I first heard it but it still gives me goosebumps when played loud enough.
At eight is Al Green's Let's Stay Together. I first heard this in the scene on Pulp Fiction where Butch and Marcellus Wallace are fixing the boxing match. It has the perfect vibe for the smoky bar that gangsters sit in corners arranging deals. It is also extremely smooth and Marvin Gay like, you would put it on if you were entertaining a lady
Number seven is John Lennon's Imagine. This message of piece and harmony has always struck a chord with me, none more so than when I watched The Killing Fields and this song plays whilst the credits roll. Watch it and you will get my point about this one.
Number six is Moby's Porcelain. Some people interpret this song to be melancholic, but I first heard it on the film The Beach and so it always reminded me of carefree times. One morning whilst walking down the beach after breakfast this song was playing from a café, I had just left a job to spend several months travelling, the scene was a quiet Thai beach with empty hammocks hung from the trees, for me it was one of those great moments of zen that happen to infrequently in life.
Number five is "In Da Club" by 50 Cent because sometimes you need something to bounce to when your drunk in a club
Number four is Tupac's California Love for similar reasons for my last nomination
"shake it, shake it baby"
Number three is Bob Marley's Redemption, in his words it is explained as a song of freedom. Much like my other nomination "Imagine" this is a song that remains positive about the potential of humankind to overcome the problems caused by the more negative elements in our world.
Number two is Manu Chao's Bongo Bong. This is an absolutely fantastic song I first heard when I was working with some guys in Greece who introduced this funky little song to me. All Manu Chao's music is brilliant for anyone with an interest in travelling because he sings about the experiences of the migrant and his struggle to integrate into different cultures. There is a great mix of languages, Bongo Bong is followed by a fun little French song called 'Je ne Taime plus'
Finally the number one of the soundtrack to my life is.............(drum roll).............. Underworld's Born Slippy.. This song definately reveals the true meaning of life. I first heard this whilst watching Trainspotting and its meaning is still relevant today.
Summary: The soundtrack to my life
