Advantages: All brilliant
Disadvantages: None
Having a browse around the site and reading other peoples top tens, I've decided to have a go myself but it's not been easy! Far far too many great tracks to choose from, could have done with a top 40. Despite being only 33, the most recent choice is from the mid 90s and my indie britpop days. Could have had loads from here: Suede, Blur, James, Elastica but my actual choices tend to come from the mid sixties of which I am a huge fan. Comes from pinching my mum and dad's old 45s. Think I was misplaced in time!
But I do put a nod to the 80s, from my Smash Hits days.
Let me know what you think....
1) ROY ORBISON IN DREAMS
My favourite song ever ever ever! His voice is just like nothing on earth and I defy anyone not to be moved by it. This song sends shivers through me that I can't explain! It's fabulous and it just builds and builds ever changing. I love it so much, I want it played at my funeral!
2) THE SHADOWS WONDERFUL LAND
My favourite instrumental tune. My mum is a big Shadows fan and I grew up on them really. I took her to see them and Cliff on theire recent reunion tour last month and they were fab! It's so moving, with their fabulous guitar and orchestral background on it. It reminds me of being about 8 and watching Animal Magic with Terry Nutkins! He was trying to save some dolphins and they had to move them, for some reason from one place to another which involved a very long road trip. They had them in these lorries in special baths but it was touch and go whether they made it. They played this tune whilst a the camera looked down on these lorries zooming up the motorway. Very moving. Can't remember if the dolphins made it...
3) DIRE STRAITS SO FAR AWAY
A guilty pleasure maybe, but a goody. The first track on Brothers In Arms. I just love Mark Knopfler's gravelly voice to his lover who is miles away while he's stuck in a hotel room on his own. It's just very catchy in trademark Dire Straits style. I'd never really heard of this one much until I met my husband whose Dad had the album. But then most dads did.
4) DAVE DEE DOZY BEAKY MICK AND TITCH LEGEND OF XANADU
A classic pop song, number 1 from 1968. Great tune, very over the top with the cracking whip and I just love it. My three year old daughter loves this, and Bend It, one of their other hits. She knows all the words and will sit with and Indiana Jones hat on and crack the whip in time. She would have this on repeat all day if I let her!
5) ROLLING STONES IT'S ALL OVER NOW
Another 60s one I'm afraid. I definitely would have been a Stoner if I'd been around then. I just love the song but the best bit is the guitar riff bit at the end as it fades out. This was used as and advert in the 80s, for Insignia deodorant I think! Anyone remember?!
6) A-HA I'VE BEEN LOSING YOU
One of the first records I bought, got it from Boots I think. I was a huge A-ha fan when I was about 11 and had posters of them everywhere, especially the gorgeously chiselled Morten Harket. It's always been my favourite of theirs, I like it much better that Take On Me and Cry Wolf. It's just different, not quite so poppy but really catchy. Can't quite dance to it though, more sort of a whirly motion with arms out. Or something. Definitely worth a listen
7) STONE ROSES SHE BANGS THE DRUMS
A toast to my indie teenage years. Baggie jeans, tie dye and bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale in the Twisted Wheel club in Carlisle which was really just a very dark cellar with lots of spotty indie kids and goths like myself really. Don't need to say anything else other than it's a classic and it takes me back to 6th form. Happy days! Thank God the Newky Brown days are behind me though...
8) PULP BABIES
Another indie classic. Pulp were fab and my favourite indie band. We all loved Jarvis Cocker. I spent a year in Sheffield, Pulp's hometown, in 95/96 at the height of Britpop and it was just a great time to be around. Dead catchy.
9) FIVE STAR THE SLIGHTEST TOUCH
Am I allowed a really really guilty pleasure?! I don't care what you say, I loved Five Star, routines in the playground and all. This is just a great pop song pure and simple AND I LOVE IT!!
10) OMD FOREVER LIVE AND DIE
My favourite song on the NOW 8 double cassette that I played so much it broke. It's lovely and floaty, very 80s and just great. It's great for driving to, we've got the 'best of' and I like this and 'If you Leave' which was on the Pretty in Pink soundtrack. Just good pop songs.
Mmm that's it, bit of an odd bunch if you will and I could have added more to this from Dusty Springfield to James, from Bobby Darin to the Pet Shop Boys. But they all some up me, my feelings, memories, and most importantly they're all flipping brilliant!!
Thankyou for looking!
Lotsa luv xx
Summary: These songs sum up me, simple as that
