Advantages: Where did my teenage years go?
Disadvantages: Lost, to a bit of a twat really.
I've just read back on this a few years later and it makes me want to cringe - but hey!
In no particular order...
(liable to change)
1.Catch The Wind - Donovan
This could have been of several songs about my childhood, including Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison and Fire and Rain - James Taylor. But i chose this one because it was the earliest i could remember.
It was the first song i really chose to like all on my own, i used to root through my parents vinyl collection and learn songs off by heart and then sing them in the hall cupboard because i was too embarrased to be heard singing !( i was a really shy wee thing) My parents were really good about it and never disturbed me. I eventually sang in front of them one day and they pretended not to notice, I've not stopped singing since!
2.Lump - The Presidents of The United States of America
Reminds me of the s**t.
3.Marilyn Monroe - Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend
The most 'girl' song ever. I don't think that the bit about diamonds is strictly true but that's probably because i've not been given a proper chance yet. Any donations will be very welcome. Sexy and the best song from the best film.
Which brings us to...
4.Material Girl - Madonna
Oh, Madonna in an exact replica of the dress worn by Marilyn singing 'Diamonds...' in 'Some Like It Hot'. A cheap and tacky version of the original but a glorious one at that! Always gets me up on the dancefloor at the kind of tacky clubs i can't stand, but get dragged into.
5.Wise Up - Aimee Mann
From the soundtrack to the film 'Magnolia'. Which y'all need to see by the way! What a talented woman, she can do no wrong. Absolutely be
autiful. The first time i heard it i felt like i'd been falling asleep to it all my life. Not that it's boring enopugh to make you fall asleep! It just felt so familiar to me.
6.Dream a Little Dream - The Mammas and The Papas
I remember three girls on swings singing themselves into a semi-stupor in the middle of the night one summer back in the early nineties. Wait a minute, that was me and i was pissed on merrydown cider, aged 15. It was still innocent though!
7. Give Him A Great Big Kiss! - The Shangri-La's
Lovely and 1960's sweet. Could have been 'The Leader of The Pack' too but i thought i'd put this one in because i was at a Northern Soul club one night and it came on unexpectedly. I was so delighted that i couldn't stop smiling all night!
8. All I Need - Air
See the video (Eating , Sleeping and Waiting by Mike Mills for Air)and you'll understand!
It depicts the relationship of a young 'skate' couple living in suburban America and it just shows that you don't always have to be hugely famous or sucessful to find happiness, and that decent love does exist.
Am i depressing you yet?
9.Radiohead - Blackstar
The first time i went to see Radiohead. They are wonderful. This song sums up the first half of my teens, including all the shitty bits, new bits, happy bits and drunken bits.
10.Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye - Ella Fitzgerald
Perfect. Happy and Sad. No faults, just gorgeous.
Summary: I got dumped - thank god.
