Advantages: All great songs
Disadvantages: Not all are singles,so I guess I lied
And by singles I mean songs in general.I'm sorry about doing twenty, but I felt I had to at least mention all the songs.I've proabably left a few out, but, I hope you'll agree, these are all great songs. 20. I Don't Sleep,I Dream/REM Typical REM,nice and simple with a great chorus. 19. We're All Very Worried About You/Fun Lovin' Criminals A more serious song from the guys, has a great beat and some guitar that doesn't demand attention but is the highlight of the song.Doesn't make sense but it's true. 18. I Might Be Wrong/Radiohead The first guitar track from Amnesiac, enough of a reason for me to love it. 17. Loaded/Primal Scream One of those songs where everything kicks in at once.Hugely uplifting. 16. There Was A Time/Fun Lovin' Criminals The Vocals are apparently sampled from an old country and western song, distort them a bit ,add some drums and guitar, and you've got The 'Criminals best song ever. 15. Get Myself Arrested/Gomez One of only two real 'fun' songs on my list, the ultimate song for your car stereo during the summer. 14. We Haven't Turned Around Yet/Gomez The first sign of Gomez growing up musically.A showcase for Ian Ball's voice. 13. My Iron Lung/Radiohead There's something about loud guitars that just turns me on. 12. Apache Rose Peacock/Red Hot Chilli Peppers A funky and farcical song, ridiculously funny. 11. Tender/Blur A simple yet rousing song. For anyone who has ever been in or out of love. 10. Pyramid Song/Radiohead Tells the storey of a suicide attempt.Lyrically it's a world away from your typical Radiohead song; "We all went to
heaven in a little row boat, There was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt' The first half is just Thom on piano, which is much more intense than the second half when the drums kick in.I prefer earlier live versions when it was just Thom and his piano for the whole song.Despite this,it's a classic, and most people's favourite song from the album. 9. Walk On/Radiohead This may well be the song that reinstates U2 as the best band in the world. It's a song that,in time, may well even rival One. It's about how knowing someone loves you is enough to keep you going, enough to keep you feeling safe. Some of Bono's best singing since The Joshua Tree,a pure rock anthem if ever there was one. 8. Sympathy For the Devil/The Rolling Stones If you're looking for a song with great rythmn and energy, then this is it.You'll constantly be pressing the repeat button,it just doesn't get boring. It goes through some of the great points in history, looking at them through the devil's perspective. It starts off simply enough, just drums and piano, but later there's some great backing singing and a guitar solo. 7. Freebird/Leynyrd Skynyrd Listening to this would inspire anyone to play guitar. This isn't your normaql 'Solo between the verses' song, this is more like 'Play untill your fingers fall off' stuff. Five of the nine minutes are taken up by the most frantic and passionate guitar solo ever. 6. Lemon/U2 'When Rock Bands Go Electronic' should be the name of a'hilarious' comic clip show presented by Michael Barrymore or Dennis Norden, because most of the time it doesn't work. But this, this is a special song.U2 are virtually unrecognisable,Bono sounds like nothing he's ever done before.Definately a Brian Eno influe
nced track. 5. Hey Jude/The Beatles A reminder of just how good the Beatles were. They took a simple message, don't be afraid to express your feelings, and turned it into an epic song. The final part, you know, the na na na na bit,is worthy of a song itself.Amazing stuff. 4. Idioteque/Radiohead Idioteque is a measure of just how far have come since their Pop is Dead days. The beats are big,the vocals are absoulutely amazing, and the meaning is baffling. It's become a favourite of everyones and has become an integral part of their live set. 3. A Day in the Life/The Beatles This, ladies and gentlemen, is a song that changed music.I'm not being naive,it really did.It was the standout song from the first concept album. It's actually two songs, the first being Johns, the second Pauls, put together.Tey're seperated by a recording of an orchestra played backwards. 2. One/U2 This song is nearly as important as the album that holds it.It came about because U2 felt they had been writing songs that were aimed at heterosexuals and they wanted to change that.Hence the 'One Love' theme. A song for everybody,an epic with an important message. This is what music is all about. 1. Paranoid Android/Radiohead The first time I heard this I was actually scared of how good it was.Delusional, paranoid lyrics, searing guitar and vocals being sung with so much passion that it's humanly possible. What more could you ask for? The song is split into three sections, the first is normal enough, some heavy guitar and delusional ramblings. Then it's much gentler, with Thom singing an almost falsetto.Next is the really heavy stuff,a solo that plays the song out. I can't even begin to comprehend how someone could sit down and write something that good,so introcate and sprawling
and so strangely beautiful.

- 02/10/01 Interesting list, apart from the balls up with number 9 and the lack of detail between 11-20. And the preoccupation with Radiohead. |
