Advantages: variety, inspiring, emotive, help create the "tingle-factor"
Disadvantages: they're mine, you might not like them, a few make me want to cry! :-(
I’ve mentioned a certain feeling before in my Music in general op (sorry didn’t mean to plug! :-p) but if you are new to Hugnluvable’s little world then I shall explain. Now if a song you hear creates a strong reaction you get a really funny sensation inside yourself – this is what I like to call the “Tingle Factor”. I love this sensation – it makes you “tingle”, it changes your emotion. It could make you so ecstatic you could cry – or even cry for the opposite reasons. Not every song in the world makes you feel like this, and not every song that I’m going to mention will have the same effect on you as it does me. But here it is – my toptentingletastic list! ~~~(10) Too Many Broken Hearts – Jason Donavan – Especially For You~~~ Oh dear, soon you’ll hear me praise the likes of Queen and John Williams and now here we start with a Peter Waterman product! Argh! You’re all going to stop reading now aren’t you? Why Erica why write this one down? Well, ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved Jason Donavan, he came to our student union for our Saturday night “Twisted” (glorified disco but with a bar!) and I was heartbroken when I found out I had to go home a couple of days earlier and couldn’t go! But why “Too Many Broken Hearts?” Its just a cheesy Jason record – well, um yes it is – but how can you not hear this at your Aunties wedding reception or somewhere and not have the urge to get up and dance? “You give me one good reason to leave me – I’ll give you ten good reasons to stay – You’re the only one I believe in – I’ll be hurt if you walk away!” If you had never heard this song and just read this lyrics you’d think its some sad soppy love ballad - but the great thing about this song is that it isn’t! Kinda
ironic really isn’t it? I mean a man who really loves a girl and is not going to give up on winning her back sounding really happy about it all. It’s a really positive upbeat pop song – and that’s the magic of it! He’s singing his heart out about how much he loves this girl and how much he wants her back - and he’s not going to give up. “Too many broken hearts in the world, there’s too many dreams to be broken in two, too many broken hearts in the world but I wont give up the fight for you!” And when you were dancing your little 8-year-old booty off in the primary school disco to this song you’d have never taken any notice of what these lyrics meant! Oh the irony of it all! 8-) ~~~(9)) M People – Moving On Up – Elegant Slumming~~~ I bet you must be thinking – what? Why? Well, I finished with this guy ages ago (long story will never get into it again!) and this song was so relevant to how I was feeling – “I’m moving on up – you’re moving on out, time to break free nothing can stop me!” There are rather mixed views about Heather Small’s voice – it gets on some people’s nerves or people think she is brilliant – I think the latter! The saxophone solos in this song are amazing as well – and I was lucky enough to see them live in Birmingham a few years ago - they was amazing. This song was the very last one to be played at the gig – I was so relieved when it came on when they came back on the stage – I would have been upset if they didn’t! ~~~(8) Robert Miles – Children Every time I hear this my heart pounds and the tingle-meter goes sky high! I love Robert Miles and his style of trance music – everything is so refreshing and euphoric, I’m taken to another place just sitting here looking out of my window thinking about it now! I love t
he way it gradually builds up; the piano theme; then the guitar theme and the strings/synthesisers in the background. Then as the percussion and bass line comes in the tune is complete and the themes can develop with fantastic added touches using synthesised sounds. This is trance at it’s best – if you hear the extended version its so easy to just sit there and let your mind just go to places that only you yourself can imagine. ~~~(7) Rhapsody in Blue – George Gershwin~~~ Oh if only I could write music like Gershwin! He is fantastic – and was an excellent piano player (if you’ve heard the piano solo then you’ll know what I mean!) This was the first piece I’ve heard sitting in front of an orchestra – and as soon as I heard it – I fell in love with it! The clarinet glissando at the beginning is what gets me at the edge of my seat to start with! It makes the clarinet sound rich, smooth and so versatile – I can play this part on the clarinet, but it took me months to perfect the glissando at the beginning. And once I played at my local music centre concert and heard the orchestra play this piece – a young boy (he was about 12!) played the piano solo with no music – it was INCREDIBLE! His legs only just reached the sustain pedals and his fingers were so quick and agile yet hard and confident – this is what Gershwin made this piece for – to show off how important and fantastic the more capable members of the orchestra were. ~~~(6) Clubbed to Death – Rob D – Matrix “You’re looking at the woman in the red dress!” Yep! This is the track in the background to the woman in the red dress simulator scene and they’re walking down a street Richard Ashcroft – Bitter Sweet Symphony stylee. It’s a great piece of music and this scene does it some justice. But if you listen to the whole track you’ll get goose bumps
believe me! It breaks in the middle with an eerie piano solo and then it gets developed upon with the funky drumbeats, Synth strings and added trumpet notes – sheer magic! It’s one of those pieces that you find something different in every time you hear it. If you don’t have the matrix soundtrack then go to Audio Galaxy and get it on MP3 – go on! ~~~(5) One of God’s Better People – Robbie Williams – Life thru a Lens This song was originally written for Rob’s Mum – “You’re one of god’s better people and you don’t know that’s why you’re special…. “I can’t live this without you, I’d die without you” And it’s just a lovely song to write for your mum and make her feel appreciated. He’s rather good at churning ballads now though isn’t he? But this one was on a B-side to Lazy Days so not a chart release, and I feel its one of his best songs. Its basically a guitar, strings, some claps and Robbie’s voice – that’s what makes it all the more emotive – making it sound more acoustic helps it to be more personal, and good old Bob is rather successful at this - bringing a tear to my eye when I hear this at times. ~~~(4) Schindler’s List Theme – John Williams~~~ This is a beautiful piece of music, which sets the scene to this delicate film perfectly. John Williams is an amazing conductor and has an exceptional gift to create such an overwhelming sensation to any film he writes for. The violin plays its heart out as the orchestra is sensitive and sympathises with the solo part. I visited Auschwitz – Birkenau in 1999 and this song will always remind me of that life changing experience. ~~~(3) Loveshack – B52s – Cosmic Thing~~~ Yep – Loveshack! You either love it or hate it! It’s a favourite amongst my f
riends from school and I – it brings back so many memories. I remember sitting in the back of a car at the age of 10 with another 4 kids and this song was blaring out of the stereo. This was the last memory I had of this song, until I met up with some fantastic people in our school music department when I was about 13 and decided to play it in our newly formed band – “Rascals”. It was great – we played it at concerts (as well as other stuff like Blues Brothers etc) and when on tour in Belgium and Austria! Oh what fun it was singing it at the back of the coach with everyone on the way back to the hostel from a concert venue in Austria! 6 years on and we are still together and playing with our old school music department when we go to Italy next year. It’s a lively song and from the moment the male coolly says –“If you see a faded sign at the side of the road that says 15 miles to the…” and the lady screams out – “LURVE-SHACK” – you know its going to be a happy, lively feel good song. It’s basically about a “Funky old shack in a middle of a field just a funky old shack…” and the B52’s can’t get away from the place! The ending is great as well – the full version is better (there is a shortened one on most compilations). The funky bass line plays as the vocals softly sing “Bang bang bang on the door baby “ and they gradually get louder as the bloke (Fred Schneider) says –“ knock a little louder sugar!” – it’s a contrasting section, but a real edge of your seat, tingly sensation maker (for me anyway!) Oh and for those of you wondering it’s “YOUR WHAT?” “TIN ROOF…. Rusted!” now you know what that rather raunchy gal shouts at the end. ~~~(2) On My Own – Les Miserables~~~ This is from the musical Les Miserables and is sung by
Eponine – in love with a man who doesn’t feel the same way about her. It is so sad! If you go to see it at the theatre take Kleenex because you will cry! I was a mess after watching Amanda Salmon perform this at the Palace; I was shaking and crying but wanted more! I loved it so much back then and it relates to my situation at the moment as well so my friends have kept the CD well hidden from me so I don’t blubber in my pillow listening to it! She sings about her love, her fantasies, her feelings and her miseries. The part that hits me the most is when she sings: “Without me his world will go on turning, the world that’s full of happiness that I have never known!” Oh dear- almost crying now! And number ONE – drum roll pleeeeaaaaassssssse! ~~~(1) “The Show Must Go On” – Queen – Innuendo (1991)~~~ My parents own most of the Queen albums and when I was little I loved “Radio Ga Ga!” As I grew older I started to delve into my parent’s collection and started to listen to the likes of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Under Pressure,” “I Want to Break Free” “It’s a Hard Life” etc! But the first time I heard this one – I was in tears. This song is pure Queen – it has everything that is inherent of the band that I love so much! Its not just the lyrical content that gives me shivers down my spine – the dramatic instrumentals leave me at the edge of my seat with a tingle that goes a thousand times over the tingle-o-meter limit – especially the tense introduction. Every time I hear this song my heart just pounds! It could be the way it starts with the heart wrenching Synth String’s chord sequence followed by the 4 heart pounding drum hits at the beginning. It could be the heart felt lyrics that Freddy sings: Empty spaces - wh
at are we living for Abandoned places - I guess we know the score On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for... Another hero, another mindless crime Behind the curtain, in the pantomime Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore? And when the drums and the fist-clenching guitar kick in as Freddy painfully cries: The show must go on The show must go on Inside my heart is breaking My make-up may be flaking But my smile still stays on Wordsworth once said that the “Whole world is a stage” - everyone has their own part to play and no matter what happens behind the scenes (in their everyday lives) the show must go on – either with or without them. That’s life – IT HAS TO GO ON! No matter what is going on around you, however you feel inside – you must keep going – carry on with life. Yeah, we can always have questions – what are we looking for? Do we want to take it anymore? But life will go on – either with or without you - rather morbid but hey! Well that’s it from me – another load of boring musical waffle finished– what will I write about next? I know one thing – it’ll take a lot less time than this one took me 8-) Oh and please feel free to comment/debate/argue/shout at me for forgetting something or loving Jason Donavan! HuGz xxx

- 07/10/01 Excellent opinion.
Have you heard the Tilt remix of "Children"? I reckon it's almost as good as the original (not quite though).

- 03/10/01 Schindler's List theme is definitely one of my faves too.
Can't say I entirely go with Jason Donovan, but then he did look lovely standing on top of that mountain didn't he?! And you bave just wonderfully demonstrated that music is such a personal thing.
