Advantages: my faves

Disadvantages: none

Top ten single time. Actually I find these types of opinions hard to write as musically I like such diverse stuff that I find it hard to narrow it down. I'll try my best but remember that it will probably change by tommorrow.

Creep-Radiohead: My favourite single of all time. Some people say that it has lost its edge and been played to death but every time I hear it it brings goosebumps out on my arms. The wailing vocals and crunching guitars are so powerful. This single changed my life as I went out and bought "Pablo Honey" and the rest is history.

Zombie-Cranberries: Again a classic song with heavy guitars and soul stirring vocals. The sentiment is not lost on many when you listen to what is being sang about and is still relevant to this day, if you do not know what I am going on about have a listen to the song. A real high point for the cranberries I feel.

From despair to where-Manic street preachers:
I love the way this single goes from softly sung lyrics to ear shattering noise in a matter of seconds. Truely the manics had genius in releasing this as it introduced us to the fantastic "Gold against the soul" album and made the manics a household name.

Belfast child-Simple minds: Another political choice but I love the way that it sounds like a traditional Irish melody with the fiddles and whistles. A powerful offering from the "Minds".

The drugs don't work-The verve: If this song doesn't make you cry then you have no feelings. Beautifully arranged and performed in what was a world of crappy pop offerings, by a band that could play their instruments. The lyrics are poignant and not good to listen to if you are in anyway slightly down. This song has to be classed as one of the most brilliant ballads of the modern time.

Lola-The kinks: A contraversial and humourous piece by a classic band. The words are brilliant and even today the song makes me smile even th
ough I know the ending.

Writing to reach you-Travis: My first taste of travis and my introduction to a love affair that remains. Fran's voice is smooth and the music tight. A breath of fresh air in the music world that consisted of "Steps" and "Boyzone" at the time.

Never tear us apart-INXS: A heartfelt offering from the aussies from the brilliant "Kick" album. This is my favourite of them and possibly because the music blends so well into itself to make a great single.

One-U2: A thought provoking single from the boys that still gets me today. I love the lyrics, the way that Bono sings is haunting and it just makes me feel good.

Inside-Stiltskin: Starting with the choir and then hammering into the guitars, brilliant. An excellent offering from what I consider to be a mediocre band. This single still gets played today in my house.

This is my list and probably does not agree with yours but I have tried to be as honest as possible.

Mate, on the whole, not the sort of music I really listen to. I do, however, especially like The Verve's one and "Zombie". Both brilliant songs.

Cheers,
Sam
