Advantages: I get to list my top 10 favourite
Disadvantages: Its really hard to recall them all when you have to
In a simpler time, songs were probably enough to capture the imagination of the listeners. That was probably when there was only a handful of records out, and a single could stay in the charts for 5 months without ever reaching number 1. So my dad says anyway. Once, an appearance on Top Of The Pops (now defunct) was enough to secure you a decent climb on the charts. However, thanks to the rise of MTV during the 80's, a record will sink or swim based on rotation on the many music channels available. Here is my Top 10 favourite music video's.
10. Travis Why Does It Always Rain On Me
This video opens with Fran Healy tied up and gagged in the back of an old banger. When his bandmates get out and wander off, he sings through his duct tape. Eventually, he free's himself and wanders off after them. I was never actually sure what was going on in the video, but I love its simplicity, and it does seem to go well with the self-pitying song from their mega-successful The Man Who album.
9. Reba Macentyre and Kelly Clarkson Because Of You
Clarkson's classic ballad got a country make over as she teams up with one of Nashville's finest stars. This wont remain my top video, but I have just discovered it and am loving it just now. It shows Clarkson in a violent relationship and her actress co-star Macentyre trying to guide her out of it. Again, nothing overly dramatic happens, but I like the message of solidarity in the video.
8. Pink Floyd Another Brick In The Wall
From a time where music video was just taking off, and certainly didn't have the advantage of today's director's or editing people, this video and its odd little animations was probably the cream of the crop. It looks dated and dull now, but back then Pink Floyd's signature tune probably had one of the best video's in the chart.
7. Kylie Minogue Confide In Me
Kylie's a little barbie doll. In fact, she's 6 barbie dolls, all encased inside a barbie house of screens. The camera flicks from side to side capturing the different Kylie's and combining her with strange bilingual messages of help for the viewers. The song is probably about abuse, and in some strange way, so is the video. Brilliant track, brilliant video.
6. Sam Sparro Black And Gold
I must have a thing about guys being stuck in the boot of their car. Whats that all about? Anyway, this recent sleeper hit from the debut album of Sam Sparro has him crawling out of a limo to dance with multiple similarly-dressed dancers. At first glance I thought it was him, but apparently not. The song is superb, and the video has that cold class that makes the song work so well.
5. The Hoosiers Goodbye Mr A
I love the play on words of the title. Also, the video is a hoot. They get to dress up as superhero's and belt the real superhero off into space on a rocket. Its as camp as get up, but the song is a real sing-a-long and the video is a romp.
4. Amanda Marshall Dark Horse
This is one of my favourite songs, and has a country feel to it. The video has Amanda sitting inside a room where the windows are actually a screen which shows the man of choice. She captures just the right amount of angst, and its glorified by the use of black and white.
3. Belinda Carlisle Circle In The Sand
An 80s classic, this song has one of the most appropriate video's in my list. Belinda's face appears on her washing as it hangs on the line like pictures in a dark room. Behind them, waves crash in the ocean. At a time when Belinda was considered a pin-up, she wriths about on the beach with see-through clothes and damp hair.
2. Fairground Attraction Perfect
This good old Glasgow band do their video in the traditional way. Eddi Reader belts out the classic number 1 aboard a barge going down a river (not sure if its the clyde or not?). Her attempts to dance are slightly cringeworthy, but the song is brilliant and the video is enthusiastic and simple.
1. Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue Where The Wild Roses Grow
This is a legendary duet between the king of goth and Australia's golden girl, where she is battered to death with a rock in the name of love. In the fairy tale video, reminiscent of the Grimms Brothers work, she lies by the side of a lake with snakes and centipede's crawling over her, whilst he strokes her in obsession.
Summary: Check out my favourite video's. I hope you like them.

- 14/10/08 I don't watch many music videos, but I generally prefer the ones that tell some sort of story rather than those that are just the band miming along to their song. |
