Advantages: I Like Them

Disadvantages: None

Since having cable TV installed about a year ago, not that I am gloating about it, I have watched lots of videos on MTV and VH1 etc. Despite the fact that recent videos use some really high tech gismos and effects, the early videos do still have a certain charm to them, as you will see in my top ten!

10. Dire Straights - "Money For Nothing"
=========================================

I loved this mid-eighties song and espceially the video which was one of the first with computer generated graphics. Some people unkindly said I look like the slimmer of the two removal men but I disagree!

It was only recently I found out that Sting provided the vocals on the "I want my MTV" bit, how ignorant I am!

9. Princess Superstar - "Bad Babysitter"
=========================================

This is just so funny, it's on the TV a lot at the moment, I don't take it very seriously but it is funny! I treat it as though it is very tongue in cheek, I hope it is or it is a bad joke, if it is meant to be a serious record.

Any song which has the word "cucumber" bleeped out has to be good really, my favourite clean quote being "in high heel shoes, you look like JarJar Binks!".

She is quite a vibrant young filly with a very odd choice of boyfriends, comments would be appreciated about this song especially.

I was going to put in Ali-G's latest video as it is also funny, but only in a couple of places so on to -

8. Superman Lovers - "Starlight"
=================================

Computer generated, humour and it tells a story too. All the ingredients I like in my videos, a bit sad at the end too, boo hoo!

The effects used and the predominant brown reminds me of DB Boulevards "Point of View" which is also another great video on the telly a lot at the moment, but I'll leave that one out of my top
ten.

7. Michael Jackson - "Thriller"
================================

Well it had to be somewhere in there didn't it really. Kind of like "Night of the Living Dead" meets come dancing, I do like Michael's dancing moves and try to emulate them when he is on TV, very amusing for my wife I can tell you.

It's been played to death a bit really which is a pity. But when you spend so much money making it you want to get it shown around a bit, Mr Bobbet has the same outlook on life.

6. Destiny's Child - Bootilicious
==================================

Sorry to say no real deep and meaningful reason for picking this other than it is quite aestethically pleasing, male readers will no doubt concur.

I do think it's fairly amusing too, those dancers imitating Michael Jackson for one thing.

5. Robbie Williams - "I Will Survive"
======================================

OK so it isn't called I will survive but you know the song I mean!

As a big Formula One fan I love this video as it has real footage from the early 1970's races, Monaco in particular. Jackie Stuart makes a cameo appearance and the Robster put's good and humourous twist at the end of the video. Not what I had in mind for a video after hearing the song for the first time, great work Bob!

4. Kylie Minogue - "Confide In Me"
===================================

This is the nearest you get to seeing Miss Minogue in a nurses uniform, need I go any further?

OK so there are also some very original ideas in the vid, the way the screens move around is quite hypnotic and it creates a lot of different emotions with all the outfits Ms Minogue is wearing, I won't go any further with this one just now.

3. A-Ha - "Take On Me"
=======================

A really great song, one of my favourites of all t
ime with an excellent video, unique and groundbreaking in it's day.

It combines video with animation, making the action seem to take place within the pages of a comic book, the girl in the vid is in fact Morten Harkett's wife.

2. Beastie Boys - "Sabotage"
===========================

A bit of fun this one, the boys get togged up as police in New York and go around kicking some bottoms. It's like a mini film, Starsky and Hutch would of been proud of.

Car chases, fights and other stunts are used to give the impression of a seventies cop show, the beasties each giving themselves a silly name in the introductions.

1. Smashing Pumpkins - "Tonight Tonight"
=========================================

This is a super song and the video is another animated one but with real actors used for the main characters.

It follows the same kind of plot and effects from the victorian age of science fiction writers. The hero and heroine go to space in an airship, land on a strange planet, get caught by aliens and then escape.

Only to land in the sea and have a cabaret put on by Neptune himself, they then get rescued by a passing liner. I like that, all in around four minutes too, well done.

It is in fact inspired by a famous writer/film-maker whose name escapes me at the moment, please comment if you know who I mean!

Some good choices there, I loved "Take On Me", and I'mm delighted you didn't put the A1 version in! For me, it needs a little more explanation as to why you've chosen the videos, as you describe them well.

Good review with some good choices, thankyou :)

Of the current crop of videos a couple of my favourites are 'd.b. boulevard - point of view' and 'chemical brothers - star guitar'.
