Advantages: On a top 10 list? Surely not, thats just silly!
Disadvantages: What did I just say?
When I used to have Sky, ( I don't anymore. It's too good for the likes of me. OK, I'm lying it was too expensive) I used to just go through a channel hopping extravaganza, and it was normally based along the lines of the music channels. It was great, because I could finally watch music videos witout them stopping and starting with a little caption underneath that said "buffering". Bloody buffering. They always do that when your trying to get one off the internet don't they? God - It's annoying. You know what else is annoying? Hardly any music videos these days are just really glamerous with some person dancing around in next to nothing with some guy feeling them up. I thought it was porn! And ya know the worse culprit for bad music videos? Atomic Kitten. Just go around in a three dancing around in skimpy outfits. God, I hate Atomic Kitten. You know who else I hate? The Fast Food Rockers! I beg your advice, do not have any sharp objects around you when those gits are on your screen... But luckily there are a few videos out there that are more intelligent and actually good!!! So, this is to list the top 10 videos have I? Ok then... By the way, contrary to what the title says, there are some in here that are not a bunch of Indie rubbish. But the majority of them are. ;) Mmm... 1. The Verve - Bittersweet Symphony When I first saw the video I was like " What the hell is going on here? " At the time it was just some bloke (Or Richard Ashcroft as he also likes to be known as) walking down a road bumping into people. So, for a while, I just had this confused expression on my face. What the hell is that all about? But the interesting thing is is that I wouldn't let it lie. I read the lyrics, listened to the song, and taped the video off Q ( Music channel ) and just watched it over and over until it makes sense. Which didn't wor
k. Some elements about it I don't get, but I get the gist of it now, after reading the lyrics. I mean, seeing the video again, I can see it's about someone who's very low, emotionally, with his life, and he's just walking down a road, and he doesn't care what happens to him. He'll bump into people, despite who they are. The obstacles in his life will just be knocked out of his way, he can't sort them out, and moreover, he doesn't want to. There's a line in the song that has a hell of a lot of a connection with the video... " I'll take you down the only road I've ever been down " You know those times you have, where you just have to say AAaaaaaah? Well, this was one of those times. :) The road he was on about in the song, is the road that he's walking down in the video right now!!! Aaaah! God - this is one of those "blonde" moments that brunettes have isn't it? So basically, Richard Ashcroft down in dumps, walks down a road, same one he always walks down, never anything new in his life, its all a big circle really, and so he knocks people out the way, the people represent the obstacles, the road represents life. Got that? Good! Next! 2. Maps - Yeah Yeah Yeahs I promised myself I wasn't going to have any videos in it where there was a band just standing on a stage singing, but after seeing this one on Yahoo a LOT, ( and it was because I wanted to see it over and over, not because the video was stuck on repeat and I didn't know how to stop it...which has happened before...it was quite stressful! ) Basically, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, are on a stage in front of a quite small group of people in this very dark indoor concert. Karen O is on the lead ( Well, that's a surprise considering she's the lead singer ) And the video starts with a high fast strumming on a guitar, by the guitarist fellow (forgot his name, sorry mate) and then a slow beat of dr
ums accompanies. All the while we continue to see small flashes of Karen O's face. Well, I say we see it, most of its covered up by her black fringe. And then, the guitar changes pace just in time for Karen O to glance at the guitar nervously and then start singing. But her voice seems nervy, scared, and almost weak on that first line. Probably because this is a very personal song for her. And normal tradition would see Karen O stronger, than this, yelping, but singing it quite softly. The expressions on her face are quite nervy, scared expressions, trying to keep it together for the sake of the song. There aren't many lyrics to the song, but nevertheless it still has the same effect. I think its about some relationship of Karen O's that wen't hideously wrong for her, and the mention of "Maps" that she sings softly every now and then maybe something to do with feeling lost and can't find him? I don't know, but the person that makes this video so efective is Karen O most definitely. At one point during an instrumental, all Karen O can do is wave her microphone around carefully, and slowly with her phone, and you can see her eyes through her fringe. She looks near tears. She may be in tears, I couldn't say, the quality of the video wasn't good enough for me to see. I don't know why this song has such an effect on her, but whatever it is, she gets it across over this video. That was a bit gloomy wasn't it? This place really needs a squaredance. That'll brighten up the atmosphere! :) 3. I Believe in a thing called Love - The Darkness Well, another recent one, I'll give you that. But I just had to have this one in my list. It's so light hearted! And fun! All of the Darkness's videos seem to be based on some sort of spaceship ( Apart from the Christmas one, I think ) And its just about a er...rock band on a spaceship! Doesn't sound like much, but its funny stuff, especially th
e guitar solo nearing towards the end where the band has to fight a giant space monster is hilarious! The Darkness are so camp, but not in a gay way, if you get what I mean. They are unbelievably whacky, but they get away with it without looking stupid, and come out of it looking like comedy geniuses! At the end of the video, they take off in their spaceship to somewhere else to do a bit of high pitched squealing. 4. Take On Me - Aha Now, I really didn't want to like this. I'm a teenager. Teenage rebellion and all that. Not meant to like what your parents like, and at times, ok, I'll give it to them, they are right, but its normally my dad who's right, and not my mother. We don't have the same tastes in...er...much...really. And I am pretty glad, because most of the stuff she likes are rubbish, in my opinion. So, I was absaloutely distraught when I saw this video, and my mum came in the room and said " Oooh! I like this video! " Nooo! I like the same things as my mother! Oh god! Noooo! Was my first reaction. So, I just pretended to hate it, in typical teenager fashion, I was in denial. But I really did like it! Its such a clever idea, to have a girl falling in love with someone from a comic strip, and then when she has to come out, and its thrown in the bin and stuff, I just really think its a good idea! 5. The Scientist - Coldplay "Why is Chris Martin walking backwards?" was my first reaction to this video. Because basically, it starts with Chris Martin on some sort of blue mat in the middle of the street, and then he gets up and starts walking backwards. There are shots of basketballs coming out of the hoops, and it is obvious the video is in reverse. It bemuses us all, what the hell is going on here? But I'm not too fussed, because of that sad sad song playing in the background. Then all of a sudden, it becomes so clear. A wrecked car is found at the edge of a fence. Ch
ris Martin has just come through a forest, and then, it becomes crystal clear. The glass smashed on the floor starts to fly back into the car window, and a girl who seems to have fallen through the first time round is catapulted back into the drivers seat. Safely back in the car, Chris reverses the car back into the road, and then drives round the corner, this time, turning around, and not smashing through the gate this time. And the whole thing makes sense! Chris has somehow travelled back in time to save his girlfriend from dying! Now theres something you don't see everyday! :) 6. Coffee and Tv - Blur Oh, I loooove this one! When I first saw it, I had no idea who it was. When I found out it was Blur, I though " Who else? " It was so unusual! This video tells the story of a the cutest milk carton I have ever seen ( I never thought I would say that..) and his quest to find the missing boy on the side of him. On the way, he encounters obstacles, and adventures, including a pink lady milk carton, who tragically dies. Soon, our little milk carton finds his owner, and his so happy! The pair head home. And on the way home our little milk carton meets his end, as the boy just decides to drink him, and toss him on to the street. Oooor! I haven't been so touched since I saw the Carphone Warehouse adverts! Sniff! That poor little phone? Why did noone want him? Sniff! Can I have a tissue please? 7. Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O Conner Sniff! Waaah! That poor milk carton!!! I wold never drink it! I would just give it a big hug! I need to watch the next video in my list to cheer me up! OH MY GOD! THATS EVEN WORSE! WAAAAHHH!!!! Sniff! Oh god, where the hell are my tissues? The sheer simplicity of the video astounds me. It is usually the more simpler videos that are the most effective, I find. And come on, this video isn't exaclty complicated is it? Sinead O Conner, close up, Sinead O Conner walking. Again and ag
ain. But hey, it works! Not only is it heart rendingly emotional as hell, it's also quite true. Love being the powerful old devil it is, can effect anyone in the same way, and here we have Sinead crying out that nothing compares to you, and I'm sure a lot of people can relate to this? I can't because I'm a heartless old codger with no human emotions...now where's that tissue? And by the way - That was a real tear you saw. 8. Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush Hee hee, I only chose this, because I think its funny seeing Kate wave her arms around in a meadow...hee hee hee! And also because I'm running out of ideas right now. And because I needed a bit of a laugh after the depressing pain of the previous few. 9. Up The Bracket - The Libertines First of all, I love the song. Really upbeat. Video. Very interesting! The video is split up into four sections at the start. Yes, they are of each member of the Libertines. What a shock for you. I bet you were expecting the Tweenies. Don't be so silly! The Tweenies have 5 members! Actually, it starts off with some girls, and then the Libertines walk up.Now, it's your choice what view you wish to pick. I didn't know, just took it all in really. Each of them were doing different things one was just walking, obviously he is the shy guitarist who doesn't really like acting much, and then we have one with some flowers, one with a pint of milk, and one with a corn on the cob? They are continually moving forward, so it's like they're coming right at you! They could walk out of the TV! AAARRGGHH! Ok, maybe not. Sorry, I have watched the Ring too many times... Now, like the band, the whole scene is confusing. Pete Doherty seems to break the barrier of the four seperate views, and then they are altogether walking up the street. I think they are trying to race eachother to see who can reach the girls house first. Because throughout thei
r walkinmg the girls are seen from different angles, and it looks like each one is just as desperate as the other to get to the girls house first. They seem to run into this house where all these girls are, ( Yes the girls at the start ) and have fun dancing, playing music, and stuff. It ends with the views of 4 again. Wierd, but I explained it as much as I could. :) 10. Everybody Hurts - REM Just we't with instinct. Couldn't think at all of a last one. But for now, this will have to do. It is very clever, using mostly shots from films it has to be said, (lazy buggers) but the classic song makes up for it. Hi. Thanks for reading. Hope you had fun! :)
