Advantages: Company and fun.
Disadvantages: lot of work
I love animals and my house suffes for it! Here is my top five pets!
Number 5
This is Goldfish. I have three goldfish at the moment, Gamblor (named from the Simpson's episode when Marge gets a gambling problem) Zoidberg (Futurama) and One Eye (only has one eye). Goldfish are as cheap or expensive as you make them really. You can buy a £5.99 bowl from the pet shop or a £599 tank from the interent.
They are fairly easy to care for too. Keep the tank clean, change the water and feed them. Fairly straight forward.
Not only are they nice little pets but in the right tank, lit up and clean they make a striking decrotive peice in your living room or kitchen.
Many people complain because they die to easily. Yes if not kept properly or are ill they will die how ever goldfish can live around 10 years some even make it to 40!! So they may outlive your dogs!
Number 4
Rats, Yuk i hear you cry! Actually rats are very clean and loving. I have kept many over the years and enjoyed them all. They very rarely bite, ive never been bitten and will even come when called. They will use a litter tray area and are cheap to feed and care for. Unlike hamsters they bond strongly with their owner and lap up attention.
But the tail is horrible I hear you say now.
The Fancy Rat Society has now reported lots of breeders breeding tailess rats. I personally dont agree with this mutation of rats as they love to climb, by breeding tailess rats they find it harder to maintain their balance, however it is a good answer to one of the big problem many people dont like.
Number 3
This has to be horses. I have had horses all my life and love the companionship. I dont have one at the moment but i hope to get my daughter and her cousin Aimee into them so i have an excuse to bue a little pony.
Unlike the other pets above horses can be expensive and will take up a huge amount of time. They need mucked out, ridden, groomed, wormed and shoed. This will eat up you bank balance.
However the reward are high, you can enjoy long hacks round the country side, a gallop on the beach or a walk in the woods. You may loose a few calories while your at it!
Number 2
Rabbits, great pets for all the family. They are friendly, playful and fairly easy to care for. They can be trained to use a litter tray and kept as house rabbits or outdoors in a hutch. They do need plenty of love and attention though, unhandled rabbits can be difficult and may scratch.
They can live to ten years or more so remember this if you are in the pet shop and fancy a spur of the moment pet.
Although good for children it is not advised to give your child soul responsability as rabbits will get bored and unhappy if they do not get plenty of time out the hutch.
Number 1
Dogs!! I have three dogs and they are great pets. They provide lots of entertainment, love and want nothing more than to be cuddled.
The bad side? Yes they do need time and money. Depending on the size of dog you will need to shell out for food, insurance, worming and flea treatment. They will need walks and plenty of stimulation to prevent your house from being chewed up. you will also need to spent a good deal of time training your dog otherwize he'll grow up using your bath mat as a toilet area and chewing up your best shoes.
In saying this they are very rewarding pets and will make a bad day good when you see their wagging tails and happy faces.
Summary: Everyone needs a pet!!
