Advantages: Pets are proven to reduce stress
Disadvantages: hard work caring for an animal
My top five pets would all be dogs but that wouldn’t make for a very interesting review and I would be in danger of producing one of those seventy five word horrors! So, I have to rethink the whole thing.
Anything remotely related to rats, mice, or looking in anyway similar is out of the question. Snakes and scaly creatures certainly don’t float my boat, so, you may ask, what does?
My favourite pet is a tame man! However, I have yet to find one that will happily sleep in its own basket when I can’t be bothered with it. These come in all shapes and sizes and vary in the amount of care and attention they need. The trouble with this choice of favourite pet is that some people (mainly men) may be offended at being selected in such a way. I can assure them that they would always be treated kindly, fed the best of food and given lots of attention. What more can a pet require/
So, I decided against listing a tame man as my favourite pet and decided to choose my dog.
My number one pet would always be a dog. Dogs are exceedingly loyal, don’t judge you and provide constant companionship. My dog protects me from strangers and makes me feel safe in my home. He gives me unconditional love in return for a bowl of food each day, a walk and lots of cuddles.
Next, I would choose a cat. Cats can be affectionate but this is usually because it suits them. Cats are independent, and very intelligent. They know how to get what they want from a human. If they need to be affectionate to manipulate you, they will, but only on their own terms. Just try to cuddle a cat that doesn’t require that kind of attention and you’ll find out.
At number three is the good old budgie. I had one of these when I was a child and managed to teach it to talk. It never said much but its favourite phrase, ‘Close the bloody door!’ amused me for year.
Next comes the rabbit. These soft, cuddly creatures can make wonderful affectionate pets if you treat them properly. They do need lots of handling when they are very young if you want to encourage them to be affectionate. Rabbits can be quite vicious if you don’t get it right.
Last, but not least comes the macqueque monkey. When I was a very small girl I lived in Malaya and had a Macqueque monkey as a pet. I can remember it being very spiteful and often quite vindictive if it didn’t get its own way.
The creature used to bite and steal anything edible it could find. In retrospect I see it as a wild creature that was confined in a house with human companions. No wonder it was a horror!
The memory of this is still very strong but I certainly wouldn’t recommend keeping one of these as a pet. That’s why it comes at end of my list!
Dogs and cats are fine, but stay away from monkeys
Summary: Dogs are tops but stay away from monkeys
