Advantages: Easy to look after and cheap
Disadvantages: Some have a short life span
Donnas Top 5 Cheap or easy to care for Pets include the following with the reasons why?
No 1 Cockatiel (Bird) - These animals are easy to keep and provide plenty of entertainment if you put the effort into it. We have one and he is like our 3rd child, he gives kiss's, whistles songs, will do some things on command. When we have him out to fly around he is so funny and plays games with you. I would advise buying a hand reared one like we did, these are normally more expensive but worth while.
No 2 Hamsters - These are ideal pets to start children off when they first want a pet. If the children handle them from day one and treat them well, they will have a lovely friend to play with. Hamsters can provide plenty of fun, our two do, I could watch them for ages. Food is very cheap and cages come in all different types and sizes.
No 3 - Goldfish - So simple and easy to look after, its a great starting point if you wish to progress onto other fish. Goldfish are cheap to look after and look good in your home. Ideal for the children to care for.
No 4 - Stick insects - Why? You may think? Well because they are so easy to care for and the boys love them. Another great first pet for a child. They hardly cost anything to care for.
no 5 - Rabbit - These take more looking after but they are the best when it comes to having a cuddle. If you handle them from day one you will find they will love all the fuss. Children find these animals easy to handle.
Why No Dog or Cat in my Top 5?
These pets are very rewarding but as first pets for children and for something cheap and easy to look after these to do fit that profile. Maybe when children learn to respect something little they can care for something bigger.
Summary: Always start your children off with little pets before you progress onto something big.

fayp - 22/01/07 Depends on the rabbit, we had one running round the house from birth, nursed it all the time...then it hit puberty and started biting and scratching us. We could then only handle it in long gloves as our arms were scratched to bits! I would never risk another after that, we all cheered when ours finally died of old age! My friend had the same experience with hers! |
