Top Five Pets
Advantages: lovely companions
Disadvantages: sadly not here anymore
For my 100th (eek!!) review I thought I would write about something that means an awful lot to me, i hope you don't mind reading!
Having read one or two reviews in this category and seeing people describe what their favourite pets are and why, i thought i would list the pets i have had rather than those i would maybe want to have.
I am a massive animal lover, i absolutely adore them and am a complete sucker for spoiling them! I don't have any pets at the moment, I am on the lookout for two kittens for my daughter (well me really but she does want a cat too!!) but I haven't been able to find two suitable ones together yet. I haven't had many pets but i will list my top five and they aren't in any order as it would be impossible to do that as i loved them all equally so i will start with my first pet.
1. Jess the cat.
Jess was the first pet i ever had, my mum bought him (yes it was a boy but i decided to give him a girls name because he looked just like Postman Pats cat!) just before i was to be turning three. Although i don't remember a great deal about him, i do remember odd times with him, like him sleeping on my bed as a tiny kitten. When he was about a year old my evil step-brother did the most awful thing to him, he swung him round by his tail and Jess hit the wall - we all thought he had died so of course i was hysterical but my mums fantastic friend managed to bring him round. We moved house when i was seven, so Jess would have been four at the time, and we hadn't been in our new house very long before Jess was run over and killed by a police car just outside our door. I remember my mum telling me he had run away and it was years and years later she told me what had really happened. I was devastated.
2. Tipsy the cat.
Tipsy was a stray cat that we took in as a kitten, and he walked like he was drunk hence the name Tipsy! It makes me sad to say that I really don't remember much about Tipsy, and I only have a couple of pictures to remember her by, as she ran away (or at least we think she did) about 8 months after we took her in). One thing i do remember about her is that she had a random ability to scale the wall and quite often she would get right up to the ceiling and get stuck!! A really mental cat she was!
3.Nibble the hamster.
When I was about 13 or so i bought my first hamster, a little grey Russian Dwarf that I named Nibble - what a cracking name that turned out to be, he was evil with everybody but me and he would just bite if anyone tried to touch him. He was fab with me though, I could handle him at any time and even if he had just woken up he still was ok if it was me. I had Nibble for just over a year I think and then one day I looked in his cage and he had died, and though i was really upset it didn't hit me half as hard as losing my other pets.
4. Wally the cat.
We got a new kitten when my little brother was about four and we let him choose the name, at the time he was mad about Where's Wally so he thought it would be funny if we didn't know where the cat was and he could say oh "where's wally?"!!! We got him from a cats protection league and he was part feral, and at the time we didn't really know what that meant but as he grew up we soon realised!! He had a real evil streak and could be lovely one minute and then just attack the next. This really didn't alter how we felt about him, he was a fantastic cat and the whole family loved him to bits. I don't suppose it helped when I used to torment him a little and put my hand under the couch and wiggle my fingers so that he would stalk me and then dive at my fingers.....oops!!! When i moved out i took him with me, as he sort've just became my cat and it just made my first house more home having him with me - although he hated my partner! Wally became very ill in the summer of 2008 and it turned out that his heart murmur had become worse and he had lots of fluid on his lungs so the kindest thing was to have him put to sleep. It broke my heart, i'd had him for almost 15 years and i still miss him now.
5. Charlie the dog.
Charlie was the first dog i ever owned. My ex partner and I decided to get a puppy and we went to look at some Border Collie puppies, and there was just one left when we got there and we just immediately fell in love with him and just couldn't leave him there! I remember the drive home with him like it was yesterday, he laid on a blanket on my knee and just licked my hand all the way home and I think this formed a real bond with me as he was just like my baby. It took about four days to think of a name for him as we just couldn't agree on anything! He really was the most amazing dog, so clever that he really knew how to play me, and me being soft fell for everything every single time! It was really easy to teach him tricks - well I say teach him, it wasn't something I was particularly planning on doing but after twice asking him to shake paw he had learnt it!! When Charlie was two, he had a seizure, which was the scariest thing i had ever witnessed and the vet said it was just a one off. However just a few days later he had another and my poor dog was diagnosed with epilepsy (apparently a common thing in Collies) and i was so upset as I just didn't want him to suffer. It was very hard looking after him, sometimes he would have regular seizures and then he'd go a few months without having one. When he was four he had a really bad one and perforated his bowel which in the end caused his organs to start shutting down so i had to make the hearbreaking decision to have him put to sleep. It was the most hurt i have ever felt in my life and I never want to feel like that again. I do feel as though I was blessed to have him though, and I still miss him and think about him everyday.
So there's my five pets, of course i've had fish like most people but i don't really count them as pets. I don't think i could choose my favourite animal to have as a pet as i love cats and dogs equally - cats are fantastically independant but also so loving which i love, and sitting snuggled up with a cat is just lovely. On the other hand i love dogs for the walks (one thing i really really miss is walking my dog), they are loving and depend on you for so much. I would never really consider having a pet such as a hamster again, they really aren't my type of animal but if in the future thats something my daughter really wants then I would reconsider. As I say I do really want a couple of kittens but I think the fear of having to go through losing them at some point is the one thing that is really stopping me from getting them at the moment, but i don't want to deprive my little girl of owning a pet either.
In a nutshell i just LOVE animals! I hope that was an interesting read for you, you have now learned that i'm a sucker for animals and will probably end up as one of those cat ladies you hear about haha!
