Advantages: It means I'm participating in Dooyoo once more!

Disadvantages: A disadvantage? There are none. Surely! :-)

**Please note that this isn't the correct category but then, is there a correct category for challenge ops? When there is it shall be moved!**

***Also, please note, if any non-regular dooyooers are reading this, I do know how to use capital letters properly. Dooyoo appears to have forgotten though!***

Right, now, onto the challenge itself!!

I wasn't planning on participating in this challenge op as I don't read a vast deal at this current moment in time (I don't have time!) However, I feel I've been neglecting dooyoo for a while now so I thought I'd put my participating hat on once more! :o)

Q1: What is your favourite genre?

Now then, this is an easy one for me as I only ever read factual books. I've not read fiction since leaving school at the age of 16 (and that was when I was reading Macbeth and Animal Farm, amongst other set texts for my GCSE English and a few set texts for GCSE Welsh too).
I really don't like fiction on the whole. I don't see the point in reading a whole fiction book. After all, when you reach the end of the book, what is it you have learnt? Nothing. Absolutely bog-all! (Or this is generally the case anyway). Of course you fans of fiction out there will say that you can learn things from fiction texts, as I'm sure you can, but in my humble opinion there just is no point in reading fiction as it is just that. *FICTION*

So, in answer to this question, I only read factual books, and they are along the lines of one of the following topics:

(a) Science (especially physics/astrophysics) - you just can't beat a good, but mind-bogglingly complex, book about quantum physics!
(b) Animals - usually an animal care book of one description or another as I'm on the look-out for getting a new pet! (Currently its ferret books! - you know what I'm angling for for Ch
rimbo, although I know I won't get one!) :-(
(c) And last, but by no means least, my current favourite of all. Yes. You've guessed it! The paranormal! You really can't beat a *factual* book about the paranormal.

Q2. Do you read the classics, i.e., the great authors of the 18th and 19th century?

Ummm, in general, then no. I have done in the past (e.g. at school) but on the whole I don't. The only 'great authors' I would read these days are those of Aleister Crowley, Matthew Gardner and the likes. But then most people wouldn't class these as being great authors. And certainly not 'classics'.

=========================================

Q3. Are you interested in thrillers?

No, not really. As you probably know from reading Q1. I don't see the point in reading such books because what do you gain from them at the end?

=========================================

Q4. What about horror stories?

As with Q3 I'm afraid. However, if this was a movie challenge it would be a completely different kettle of fish. Horror is my favourite film genre but I've never read any horror books and don't really intend on doing.

=========================================

Q5. Do you read science fiction?

I'm afraid not! As with Q3 and Q4!

=========================================

Q6. How many Harry Potter books have you read?

None! However, if I *was* to read any fiction books then I probably would give these books a go as I could probably get into them. If its any consolation I have seen the first Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone".

=========================================

Q7. Have you ever read and enjoyed biographies or autobiographies?

I've never re
ad any at all. Can't really say much more than this!

=========================================

Q8. Do you remember any of the books you read and loved as a child?

Oh yes, quite a few!
Of course one of the first books most children read (and enjoy!) is that of "The Hungry Caterpillar". There is also another 'interactive' type book that I never actually owned. A friend of mine had one and I absolutely adored it. I can't remember much about it and certainly can't remember its name. I've been wracking my brain trying to remember more about it to see if any of you dooyooers know what its called but I can't remember :-(
Other than those books for really small children I soon progressed onto my love of all creatures great and small. (Both literally and non literally!) In that I mean I started reading books about pet care and about animals in general. My passion for nature/wildlife began early! I was soon reading about creepy crawlies of all varieties too (and soon started keeping them as a pet!) Guess what I wanted to be when I was younger?!
Then the true "All Creatures Great and Small" books started at the age of about 6-7. Since then I've wanted to be a Vet!
At the age of 7-8 I read my first (and, currently, only Tolkein novel), that of "The Hobbit". I absolutely adored that book and do intend on reading it again sometime, despite it being fiction!

=========================================

Q9. Have you re-read these books as a grown-up?

Kind of answered this a minute ago! See Q8!

=========================================

Q10 Is there a book of which you can say it has influenced you?

In a way I guess there's been a few. All being James Herriot books. Namely "All Creatures Great and Small". The books, coupled with the, then, superb TV series is what spurred my fasci
nation with the Veterinary Medicine field. Since that first book and programme I have wanted to be a Vet. I've only been through a few 'changes of mind' since (lasting all of a day!) and that was when I saw my first Indiana Jones and "The Temple of Doom" film. At which point I wanted to be an Archeology. That soon passed when I realised real archaeology isn't quite like that. I switched back onto wanting to be a Vet, since that day I've wanted to be a Vet ever since!

=========================================

Q11. Which are your favourite authors?

I'm not really sure. I don't have any I don't think. I think some authors are extremely talented (one that springs to mind here being J.R.R. Tolkein, despite me only reading The Hobbit once, at the age of about 7!)

I've never read any books by Terry Pratchett but from what I've heard of this author I'm told I'd love his books. I shall have to give them a go sometimes!

Prof Steven Hawking writes some cracking books.

And I guess I ought to include my boyfriend in this bit too hadn't I? Mark Baker, author of 3 books.

=========================================

Q12 Which book would you take with you on a desert island?

I really aren't sure to be honest. I'd have to think about this long and hard! It would also depend on how long my stay on the island was for - longer stay warrants a longer book!

=========================================

Q13 What is your attitude towards translations?

Don't really have an opinion on them. Never thought about it to be honest. I have no problem with them.

=========================================

Q14. Do you buy your books/get them from the library/borrow them from friends/steal them?

Generally I get most from a library. I also buy from Amazon. I someti
mes borror from friends. Can't say that I've ever stolen any!

=========================================

Q15 When you buy books, do you prefer hardcover editions or pocket books?

Either really, its the content that matters!

=========================================

Q16 Have you ever tried Audio Books?

Only those that you used to get as a child, you know, fairy tale ones like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Jack and the Bean Stalk, those sort of things.

Nice to see you writing again, Sarah... I was wondering where you'd got to!
The Hungry Caterpillar rules! :o)

wow, that was a different line-up of books. Except James Herbert. I saw the film before the books, but I still enjoyed the books a lot when I finally read them. He had me falling about laughing in spots.

PS - my most exotic pet has been a chameleon. I'll have to check out your animal/pet section stuff. Sounds interesting.
