Advantages: brilliant tunes
Disadvantages: none
Ah, where to begin!
Top ten Beatles albums might have been easier! Anyways, here is my top ten beatles singles in no particular order:
1. A Hard Day's Night - They kicked everything up several notches with this, the official soundtrack to their first foray into the world of motion pictures. The lyrical set off of blue collar work ethics against true romance is simplistically brilliant as the doldrums of the work day get washed away by the love of a good woman. Sounds just like real life!
2. Norwegian Wood - taken from Rubber Soul, the beautiful sound of the sitar is prominent on this gem, which shows the turning point of the groups musical evolution both in terms of style and the more progressive sounds that followed.
3. Hey Jude - Brilliant tune featuring a near full orchestra! A truly epic song that would shoot to number 1 today.
4. A Day in the Life - Taken from Seargent Peppers, another epic, showing the depth musically and lyrically of the Beatles. The famous cacophonus ending has helped to make this an everlasting classic.
5. Helter Skelter - Taken from The White Album, Helter Skelter is equally infamous for not only being The Beatles' first foray into more aggressive, downright metallic song structuring, but also as the song that inspired the notorious Charles Manson and some of his Manson Family exploits in the late '60s. Scary enough. Covered by U2 classically as the opener to Rattle and Hum.
6. Come Together - From Abbey Road, Come Together was ctually written for political purposes. The song still is strong now, and actually has made its way into commercials. Was covered for the charity album Help by Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller.
7. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - Taken from Seargent Peppers, people will always ask what is the song about? A woman or drugs? One of the debates that will never die, but it was very clear at the time that The Beatles were doing a lot of LSD, so it could be pretty obvious to some what they are singing about here. No matter what the topic was though, this song is a great one with some great chords backing it up.
8. Yesterday - Off the Magical Mystery Tour, this song still brings a tear to my eye, with such sincerity dripping through the while song. One of the most re-done songs that The Beatles put out, it is a mournful song about the past. It is one of those songs that can make you sad or give you strength all at the same time. "Yesterday, Love was such an easy game to play", is a golden lyric that tells all about maturity and how as life progresses you actually realize what love really is.
9. In my life - This song has a beautiful, haunting melody. The words are also haunting and powerful, evoking both the bitter-sweetness of looking back, and the power of love in the present. From Rubber Soul.
10. Here comes the sun - From Abbey Road, A brilliant feel good, summer song. You know it is the summer time, when this is on constant play on the radio and always on the tele!
Summary: great music
