Advantages: Beatles never age
Disadvantages: Hard to pick
Slight caveat before starting - this subject is everchanging for me as I find it very hard to ever pinpoint my own specific favourites from this legendary band. However saying that, here I go:
1) Strawberry Fields Forever - The greatest number 2 ever. Far better and deeper than the playful Penny Lane on the other side.
2) I Want To Hold Your Hands - Raw youthful power and vigour and though innocent filled with undertones of sexual pop.
3) I am The Walrus - the greatest lyrical treat from Lennon's pen and full of imagery
4) Day Tripper - Just that riff on its own is massive
5) Hey Jude- this list has been very Lennon-centred but this from MacCartney could have been number 1 on my list any other day ... I blame T-Mobile raping it for their ungodly gains. Grrrrrr
6) Eleanor Rigby - haunting, delicate, melodic.... so good!
7) Ballad of John and Yoko - Just John and Paul played on this late number but energetic, fun and errr, historical!
8) She Loves You - Raw passionate rock/pop which broke the Beatles into a whole new sensation. Also fun in German (Sie Liebt Dich Ya Ya Ya)
9) Something - Frank Sinatra called it 'Lennon and MacCartney's greatest love song.' Well this HARRISON written love song just goes to show his talent
10) Come Together - destroyed by Michael Jackson, this Lennon song is dark, deep, groovy and cool as...
And 4worse singles...
1) The Long and Winding Road - an epic everyone seems to agree but I find it dour and whimsy.
2) Lady madonna - Just really dislike this song but not quite sure why!
3) 8 days a week - I'm sorry folks, it's just personal taste...
4) Hello Goodbye - bit too playschool for me (though of course there isn't really such thing as a bad Beatles song!)
And Best 4 overlooked B Sides:
1) She's a Woman - could have been a Chuck Berry number
2) You Know My Name (Look up my number) - hearAnthology version for more fun!
3) Rain - great backwards lyrics
4) PS I Love You - early classic
Summary: Beatles singles could teach modern music a thing or two... oh wait, they do!
