Advantages: A trip down memory lane
Disadvantages: I feel old
I've recently been a bit of a nerd and been sitting in the pub doing 'High Fidelity' style 'top tens'. (Most of which will probably appear on Dooyoo if there's a category. . maybe even a top ten top tens? Or is that taking things a bit far?!
This one was by far the favourite one to do, a real trip down memory lane. I wish I was 5 years old again. Life was much more fun...
10) ART ATTACK
Presented by Neil Buchanan and this looking back was quite cringeworthy, but I guess that's the same with all kids programmes. It was kind of like the 'here's one I made earlier' section of Blue Peter for the whole show. A show which showed you how to make the likes of a dinosaur desk tidy from a toilet roll. I'm sure he had shares in PVA glue.
9) SIMON AND THE WITCH
I used to love this programme, it was on CBBC and was about a little boy called Simon, who befriends a witch called Mrs. Err played by the brillaint Elizabeth Spriggs. Mrs. Err had a black cat called George who used to eat table legs. It also had a brilliant theme tune. I hope some of you remember this one.
8) THE RETURN OF THE PSAMMIAD
Now this one borders on the obscure and my memory of it is a little vague but I remember that I loved it and can see the 'Psammiad' very clearly. The show was about a group of children who meet a Psammiad (pronounced Sammy-ad), which is the cutest little creature who lives in the sand. He grants them wishes and lives in the sand as he must never get wet. A great show that seem to have been forgotten. I couldn't even find much on the net to research it and jog my memory further. Anyone here used to watch it?
7) THE QUEEN'S NOSE
I think all little girls in the nineties liked this show. It was about a girl called Harmony who is given a magical 50p coin by her Uncle Ginger. If she rubs the Queen's Nose on the coin, her wishes are granted. As I'm sure you gather, the stories each episode are about what happens when wishes don't always turn out as she would like. A very good 'be careful what you wish for' moral to the story. I remember she had a rabbit she used to talk to, and later on in the series more animals were in it too. I remember liking it as when I was little as I had a pet rabbit and was (and still am) animal mad.
6) BUTTON MOON -
'We're off to Button Moon, we'll follow Mr. Spoon, Button Moon..Button Moooon!' Another great theme tune. This show looked like it was put together in someones bedroom in about half an hour. I think that was it's charm though.
5) RAINBOW-
I think this is one of the best loved kids shows of all time. Bungle, George and Zippy (oh and of course, Geoffery) really just talked a lot of nonsense but they were great characters. My favourite was Zippy. It's a shame it's been so spoofed since, but even I admit some of them are funny.
4) DAPPLEDOWN FARM-
Presented by Brian Cant, this was a brilliant sweet programme. The re-ran it on Channel 5 recently and I watched it all over again. The farm was made up of puppet animals including Dapple the horse and Columbus the sleepy Rooster who only woke up to count things 'Count 'em!' he used to say!
3) SESAME STREET-
I loved the Oscar the Grouch. In fact I think I've become him! This show was on at luchtime if I remember rightly. Most kids shows were on in the morning or 'after school' time. I think every kid was switched to Sesame Street at lunchtime. Favourites like Big Bird and Elmo have sparked no end of spins offs.
2) FRAGGLE ROCK-
'Wipe your cares away, worries for another day, let the music play down on Fraggle Rock!' I think this was the best theme tune of them all. I recently bought a punk rock version of it by a group called Allister. Look it up if you haven't heard it, it's great! The Fraggles were so cute, but I think I liked Sprocket the dog best!
1) ROSIE AND JIM-
I adored this programme, created and starring John 'Postman Pat' Cunliffe, this was about two dolls, Rosie and Jim who lived with John on a narrow boat, he used to sit and write stories about Rosie and Jim and the adventures they got up to. I used to watch these over and over. My poor mum!
I know these aren't the most classic list of kids TV. Most list toppers like The Magic Roundabout, Bagpuss and The Clangers I think I got into more growing up as a retro interest as the first time round they were a little before my time. These are the programmes I remember watching most as a child though and I still love them all today.
This review has been brought to you by the letters R and J and the number 10.
Summary: I miss these programmes, bring them all back!
