Advantages: Cadbury's chocolate is undoubtedly the nicest chcolate ever!
Disadvantages: Cadbury seem to discontinue my favourite products :o(
Although I'm currently trying to lose a bit of weight (being ill and having the doctor prodding my excess stones of stomach fat spurred me on), I thought I'd indulge myself in a mind-fest of chocolate delights. In general I'm not really a person with a sweet tooth - give me a sausage any day - although I am partial to the odd chocolate fudge cake, and of course to the odd chocolate bar, but in general it must be Cadbury's. Forget your fancy Belgian chocolates (although I won't say no if you're passing round the box at Christmas), and that Swiss stuff that people used to bring back from holidays in France - Cadbury's is by far the best.
So let the countdown begin....
10. Cadbury Nobble Bar - This is a rant really more than anything. It must've been 1997 or 1998 when Nobble bars were around (it was the time I was working in a shop as I bought them on my break), and sold for the fantastic price of 20p - they were small, but well worth it for the taste! I can't remember what was in them, but they were chewy and yummy,
However, they discontinued them...with no word of warning - very disappointing and upsetting. However what was even more upsetting was when Cadbury in their infinite wisdom decided to discontinue one of THE nicest drinks in the world EVER - Cadbury Chocolate Cream Liquor. This must have been back in 1996 or so, a few years before I was legally able to buy a bottle for myself. I have been upset about this ever since.
So, more than number 10 being just about a nobble bar, it's about all those yummy chocolate products which are sadly with us no more. Forget Wispa (I never even noticed they'd gone), bring back nobbles and cream liquor!
9. Toblerone (Kraft Foods) - One of the few non-Cadbury items to make my list, and not something which I eat a great deal of. However there's something so distinctive about that almondy nougatty goodness. Those thick triangular pieces which you could break a tooth on (if you so desired), especially when straight from the fridge (as all chocolate should be). Only problem is it's impossible to just have one triangle, and the large bars seem to taste so much better than those mini ones! Toblerones also remind me of duty free, and I remember back in 1990 after buying one on the boat we drove from the north to the south of Spain in my dad's black Peugeot 205 (which he still drives now) in temperatures well into the 90s. I'd piled my library books on top of the chocolate and forgotten about it, until we arrived at the apartment and my Toblerone had become part of the car's seat.
8. Cadbury Time Out - is this a biscuit or a chocolate? Probably a biscuit really, but more a chocolate than a Kit Kat. Although similar to a Kit Kat, Time Outs are just so much nicer what with their delicious Cadburyness. I haven't actually had one in ages...
7. Nestlé - Smarties - Only smarties have the answer apparently, ah the memories. I have a fantastic personalised book I got from Smarties when I was little, back in the days before Rowntree was bought by Nestlé. I used to love Smarties, we played a game every Christmas where my mum hid Smarties round the house and we had to find them - months later I'd find Smarties hiding behind the sofa - thankfully these were the days before health and safety made children's lives miserable and boring. Smarties of course are not what they used to be (and I'm sure they don't taste as good since they got rid of the artificial colours), and I've only bought them once or twice since the packaging changed from being cool to being crap.
6. Maltesers (Mars) - I can't think of maltesers without hearing "they're lighter than ordinary chocolate" from the advert. They might be lighter than ordinary chocolate and they might only (only?) have 179 calories per serving, but how the hell is it possible to eat just one serving when hubby has bought me a big bag of them? But they taste so good, I love that bit where the biscuity bit melts on my tongue.
5. Cadbury Chocolate Buttons - Another childhood favourite, and not something I eat often now. Not much to say about these except that they're best from the fridge, although it can be fun if they melt on your fingers. Actually Cadbury used to do a packet of cake mix which you just added eggs to, and cooked. It was a buttons cake as it had buttons to put on the top. Honestly, these cakes were just divine, and I brought one into work on special occasions (like my birthday) and everyone loved them, but surprise surprise, Cadbury's have discontinued them :o(
4. Cadbury Roses Chocolates/ Cadbury Heroes - I'm kind of cheating here because I was just going to say Roses, but then I remembered Cadbury's Heroes (which are just like mini chocolate sized bars of chocolate - the Cadbury equivalent of Celebrations) which are even better! Give me Roses over Quality Street and Heroes over Celebrations any day! Yum, especially the purple one in the Roses box!
3. Cadbury Flake - A bit messy, but who can resist? Also a fantastic chocolate to put on the top of cakes. November 5th is my dad's birthday and my mum always makes a bonfire cake which has flake bars stacked around it to make it look like a bonfire. We always fight to get the bit with the most flake - oooooh, I'm so excited that I'm going to be down at my parent's for that in a couple of weeks! The other thing to do with a flake is to get a big banana, cut down the centre and scoop out a bit of the flesh. Cram a flake bar into the hole, wrap in foil and put in the oven (or on an open fire/barbeque) until soft - absolutely delicious!
2. Cadbury Dairy Milk - If you haven't gathered by now, I like Cadbury's chocolate, so my review wouldn't be complete without including a bar of Dairy Milk which IMHO is the best chocolate in the world. I once had a fantastic recipe for a Devil's Food Cake which had about 1kg of dairy milk in it, it was heaven. Mmmmmm, 1kg bars, I used to get one at Easter from a friend, it didn't last long!
1. Cadbury Wholenut - What better than the best chocolate in the world with nuts in it too? Well, nothing which is why it is at the top of my list! My mouth is watering just thinking of it - do I suck the chocolate, or do I just munch it down? The decisions I have to make. Undoubtedly much nicer (like all chocolate) from the fridge. Yum!
So, there ends my top 10 chocolates. As you can see for me it's generally got to be Cadbury's (with just 3 exceptions) - I don't care if it's not 'real' chocolate in terms of cocoa content!
Summary: Mainly Cadbury with just a few others....
