Top Ten Horror MoviesNewest Review: ... not feature anything supernatural, but its genius is definitely in the way it focuses almost half the film on its first victim. Since Psycho few films have been able to replicate this or even really followed its lead, and yet it works brilliantly in installing fear in the viewer. You are suddenly thrust from one type of film into another, as your main sympathy is focused towards worrying about a thief getting caught and then suddenly matters get really crazy. Whatever Happened to Baby Jane (1962) As much as I adore the 1930s and '40s, the best era for horror as far as I am concerned were the 1960s and '70s. I am being unfair on the '50s... more |

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920) Filmed at the height of the German expressionist movement, this silent horror is the true stuff of nightmares. The lines of reality and fantasy blur, as we watch a story of an insane doctor who commands a sleepwalking slave to murder. As the film unfolds towards the end we discover all is not what it seems. It's a genuinely eerie piece of work from the misshapen scenery to the creepy Caligari and his murderous slave, Cesare. Nosferatu (1922) Luckily a print survived the forced destruction of F.W. Murnau's attempt at the Dracula story. Despite the film's obvious similarities with Bram Stoker's story the ... Read the complete review

Here's my top ten for the Kensington Gore freaks out there. My idea of horror is not like Hogsflesh's idea of horror - headless men and lusting lesbians - but the safety and sanity of the more conventional and cliché. They are in no particular order although they are listed in the order I remembered them so I suppose that is favouritism of some sort... Remember guys you can rent any five older films for five quid for the whole week at Blockbusters high street! **************** Poltergeist (1982) *****5 Stars***** Diane: "Sweetheart, do you remember last night when you woke up, and you said "They're here.'? ... Horror films are one of my guilty pleasures, I guess I just love being scared, but then its very rare for me to find a film that really makes me scream. My favourite horror films arent always the scariest.... 1. When A Stranger Calls - Based on the Urban Legend - You know the one, girl babysits, gets anonymous phonecalls, find out they are coming from INSIDE the house. This story used to give me nightmares as a child and the film scares me almost as much, there is one scene in particular, in the childrens bedroom. 2. Urban Legend - Noticing the small theme yet, I love Urban Legends and this movie has so many of them all in one neat little ... Read the complete review

I think this is the hardest thing in speakers corner that I am going to write. I love horror films and they're my favourite genre. I have seen and own so many that it's going to be hard to only pick 10. (Not in a specific order) 1. The Shining Jack gets a job as a caretaker for a big hotel during the winter months when it is closed down and moves up there with his wife and son, Danny. There isn't really anything to do at the hotel and Jack starts to go a little crazy and takes it out on his family. Danny also has some kind of psychic powers and he can sense the bad things that are going to happen. The atmosphere that is built up in ... Read the complete review

The word horror can be very diverse when it is used in regards to movies, for example I personally wouldn't consider Jaws a horror while others might. I therefore encountered some degree of difficulty when choosing my top ten horror movies, but nonetheless I managed. At the end of the day everyone has a different idea about what makes a good horror movie, and what makes a film a 'cut' above the others. Some prefer guts and gore, others prefer the pysicological element, and some like the films with comedy thrown in the blender. I've been watching horror films since I was roughly seven years old and I've always been a fan of the horror ... Read the complete review
