I will have to include quiz and game shows here, because I don't think there are 10 really good quiz shows.
1. 15 to 1, by far the best quiz show that has ever been, in my opinion. The questions were actually taxing, there was no parping around with inane chatter about the contestants personal lives, or any of the 'oh I know the answr to that, because I went on holiday there...... blah, blah blah'. Just straightforward questions and answers. William G was a legend of course.
2. Catchword. An under rated game show, hosted by Paul Coia. The contestants were given 3 random letters and had to make up the longest word possible with those three letters. The word had to start with the first letter, and the other two had to appear in order somewhere in the word. Favourite words were Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis, which at the time was the longest word in the dictionary (it may still be the longest I have never looked lol), or Floccinaucinihilipilification. There were a couple of other rounds which meant looking for anagrams or hidden words. The prizes weren't great, a book from the reference library, or if you got 5 wins in a row you got a bigger prize. I used to watch this with my sister and we'd try and outdo each other. Normally my sister won though :( .
3. Question of Sport. I've never been the sporting type, but I quite enjoy watching sport and used to love watching QoS. I first started watching it when Crazy Horse (Emlyn Hughes) and Bill Beaumont were captains, and as much as I disliked Emlyn as a person, he was quite funny on the show. I don't generally watch it now because I never get chance to watch sport any more.
4. Eggheads. I actually pondered hard about putting Eggheads in, but since I do watch it whenever I can I guess in some way it must be up there in my top ten. But in all honesty it irritates the heck out of me. The Eggheads are the most obnoxious bunch of people going, and give clever people a bad name, CJ in particular needs a swift kick up the backside to knock his personality into gear. The waffling from the contestants also irritates, it's not hard just to answer a question without giving your life story at the same time.
5. Going for Gold. I had to put this in, purely because of the entertainment factor. It is probably one of the most appalling quizzes ever created. But it was so funny having a bunch of people who struggled sometimes to speak English, trying to understand the very broad Irish accent of Henry Kelly. Having said that, the Europeans generally did much better than contestants from the UK or Ireland.
6. 3-2-1. How anyone ever won anything on this show is quite beyond me. The riddles in the final round that had to be solved in order to win, were totally indecipherable. Picking the booby prize (Dusty Bin) in the final round meant that all the contestants won was a brand new bin! It was another really bad show, but there was something about it that made it compulsive viewing.
7. They Think It's All Over. Another sports quiz, but absolutely nothing like QoS, hosted by Nick Hancock, it was a bit of a mickey take of quiz shows. Rounds like Feel the Sportsman added to the fun of the quiz. Nobody took it seriously, it was just a fun, entertaining half hour.
8. Are You Smarter Than a 10 Year Old. I enjoy this show, but sometimes the kids on it drive me mad. They are so cheeky its unbelievable, I would never allow my children to speak to adults in the way these kids do, their parents must be highly embarrassed when they watch it. Many of the questions are incredibly easy, but I have to say some of them have me stumped. And although I have 10 year old at the moment, a lot of the subjects they cover he has never learned about.
9. Weakest Link. Another quiz show I love to hate. The questions on all bar the last round or two are so unbelievably easy, and to make them even easier the contestants are often given a multiple choice answer! I don't find Anne Robinson particularly funny, I think the Queen of Mean image has past its sell by date. But again there is something about the show that means I continue to watch it (could it just be there is nothing else on at that time?).
10. Call My Bluff. Not a very popular show, but I used to enjoy it. The celebs had to try and choose which of the 3 on the opposite team were giving the true definition of and obscure word. Sandi Toksvig was my favourite on the show.
Well that's my top ten of quiz/game shows, hope you managed to get to the end without falling asleep :)
Summary: My top ten.

- 10/02/09 William G is the best quizmaster ever, even better than Holness. There, I've said it, I've never been one to shy away from controversy.

- 09/02/09 I loved going for gold when I was a child. I used to love being home from school so that I could watch it but they would never put it on in the holidays because they had childrens t.v instead...maybe I was a strange child!
I love are you smarter than a ten year old. I don't really watch t.v anymore but in my last house I used to watch it all the time. |
