Top Ten Science Fiction TV ProgrammesNewest Review: ... ship, the Liberator, and crew, constantly on the run from the TTF, the Totalitarian Terran Federation. They controlled the humans by mass surveillance and brainwashing (sounds familiar), drugging their food, water and air. Blake escapes in the Liberator, a stolen alien vessel, far advanced to anything the TTF have. Where as Roj Blake was a freedom fighter his crew were villains, Kerr Avon ... more |

With the new Star Trek movie breaking all box-office records and as yet not getting a duff review from one single film hack it's a good time to talk Sci-Fi. I'm not a huge fan of the genre on TV (I have had girlfriends) and was quite alarmed the other day to see some chap that had gutted his shoebox flat and rebuilt it to duplicate the bridge on the Star Ship Enterprise, in tribute to his unused light sabre, leaving no room for a kitchen or a double bed, which he obviously wont be needing. Sci-Fi is pure escapism and its followers tended to be the least charismatic and attractive people around. But the new Doctor Who and the likes of Lost and Hero's has changed all that, ... These are my top ten science fiction shows, which you can watch at the moment on various channels. Gotta love those repeats. 1) Battlestar Galactica - the new version, it rocks. I love the fact that Starbuck is female but still pulls no punches. Love that it reflects how we are now, and the faults of being human. 2) Stargate SG1- the original stargate show, I love watching the repeats and wish it could comeback. 3) Stargate Atlantis- All hail the McKay. Rodney McKay is a brilliant character and for me really makes the show. Sad that's it's finishing after this season. 4) Firefly- Joss Whedon's western in space. Tongue in cheek ... As usual, the also-rans - unusually shoved at the beginning: Buffy and Angel, which I couldn't completely class as sci-fi in my head. Dark Angel, Jessica Alba's big break as a runaway, super-human genetic experiment. The Lost Room - a brilliant, computer game-like mini series about mystical Objects with strange powers. And probably a ton more I just can't recall right now! And a note on the absent: I'm really just not so fond of 'old' sci-fi. It's not the kind of genre that ages well, in my opinion. There is a great deal of nostalgic fun to be had from 'Land of the Giant' and other things I watched (reruns of!) as a smaller person. However, these days I ... Read the complete review

Ok, I will make a statement here that is not likely to shock anyone who has read many of my reviews. I LOVE science fiction! From the early 70's when my preschool eyes clamped onto the original Star Trek in its early reruns, to Space 1999, Buck Rogers, you name it, as a kid I probably was absolutely glued in front of the screen. It inspired me to take an interest in astronomy and other sciences, and to look beyond mere appearances to the person beneath the skin, and fed my ever growing sense of wonder at the universe. Below are my top ten favourite shows. Some are new, some are old. What they have in common is plain old high quality eentertainment. They are in ... Read the complete review

This list sort of become a “Top Twelve”, as I wrote the top ten ages ago (on another site) and then thought of two more, but didn’t want to leave out the two that would’ve been knocked off the list!) There are a few series that didn’t quite make it… Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - this is absolutely brilliant, but was a mini-series rather than a series, so I didn't feel I could include it. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 - basically didn’t make it because I haven’t seen many episodes of either so I can’t really say how good the series as a whole is. Space 1999 - I remember really liking this as a kid, and remember ... Read the complete review
