Advantages: You either love them....
Disadvantages: ...or you don't
Love them or hate them you have to admit that you can't really avoid them this time of the year. To be quite honest I do enjoy Christmas song and do believe that they help me get into the Christmas mood each year. This year however I have been a little stressed with Christmas and can't seem to get in the spirit.
I have been trying since leaving university to get a permanent, full-time job but having no luck whatsoever. 300 applications later with only two failed interviews I am starting to give up on the idea of my dream job.
Everyone around me is delightfully singing along to the Christmas tunes looking forward to their work parties and meals but me...well I sit feeling sorry for myself wishing that Christmas this year will just go away.
This afternoon I did try however to get on with things and grabbed the Christmas CD to play whilst writing cards and wrapping presents. To say they made me eel better would be a lie but they did get me into the 'spirit' and move me on my way to being somewhat excited about Christmas.
IT is for this reason, combined with my constant changing style in music that I have chosen my top 10 Christmas songs!
SONG 10
Silent Night
----------------
This is another one of those songs that have significant meaning, based on the true meaning of Christmas. After all Christmas celebrates Jesus's birth and not the fact that it snows in the winter, or that Rudolph has a red nose. This was the first song I learned to play on my keyboard by rote and although I can no longer play it I remember the keys GAGBC and could still play part of the song off by heart!
SONG 9
The twelve Days of Christmas
--------------------------------------
I don't really know why I chose this one as I can never remember the 12 days. I suppose it one of those songs that remind me of school. GO to a pub quiz this time of year and they are sure to ask a question about this song!
I know the partridge in a pear tree that's about it ;-) but it's quite a fun song to sing as part of a round with kids!
SONG 8
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer
----------------------------------------
OK so this is my immature side showing again. I love this song for some very immature reasons and that is because the 'funny version' forbidden in most schools is often sung aloud. I remember being in the school choir and whereas most kids sing the normal version you get one or two that will try their best to ruin it with funny lyrics...the funniest thing is to realise that the parents and teachers are often singing the other version.
Last year I went along to the local choir (Lazy Singers and Male Voice choir) Christmas service and of all the boring, serious song my favourite was this one - probably because it was the only one I recognised. You just know that when you hear this song being sung in the streets that Christmas is not far away!
SONG 7
Bing Crosby - White Christmas
----------------------------------------
This is one of those songs that everyone is aware of. I remember singing it in primary school at the end of the nativity play. I am not really sure why I like it other than the fact it has nostalgic value. The voice of Bing Crosby is very dreary and boring but has that relaxing value loved by many so its quite a good all-round song really.
SONG 6
Gheorghe Zamfir - Jingle Bells
---------------------------------------
I have chosen this version as I love the variety of instruments used. This version does not have any form of lyrics or singing but it's a pleasant difference. Sometimes a instrumental only version is useful particularly for karaoke and singing along to...especially if you're out of tune like me ;-)
SONG 5
Gary Glitter - Another Rock and Roll Christmas
---------------------------------------- --------------------
This has to be another classic. One that always gets me dancing about the room and singing at the top of my voice. Today was no different in fact combined with Merry Christmas Everybody I was soon feeling a little happier!
A few years ago well a very long time ago (when Leeds were in the Premiership) my dad and I managed to create a funny song to sing when Man United played the mighty Leeds. I will never forget that, probably not from choice but I can't help sing the alternative version at the beginning.
---------------------------------
Light The Lights, Ring the Chimes
Man United are Sh**e
---------------------------------
Immature I know but if you can't be a little childish at Christmas when can you? ;-)
SONG 4
Chris de Burgh - A Spaceman Came Travelling
--------------------------------------- --------------------
What a beautiful song - I love it. I always used to associate the song with a spaceman and did not know why it was played at Christmas but on listening carefully it's about the Christmas story.
He followed a light and came down to a shed,
Where a mother and a child were lying there on a bed,
A bright light of silver shone round his head,
And he had the face of an angel, and they were afraid...
It's such a beautiful song and the lyrics are really quite fascinating. The tune is very relaxing and the amazing voice of De Burgh is great. When the song really gets going and starts with the la la la la la melody it is more lively...but still beautiful.
It's not the sort of song many would link to Christmas or would play to get them in the Christmas mood but I really think that it portrays the real meaning of Christmas.
SONG 3
The Snowman - Walking in the Air
--------------------------------------------
W hen I was younger I loved The Snowman. My mum and dad bought the audio tape and book, Video and a cuddly Snowman. I absolutely loved it. My mum would apparently come up to my room and I would be sleeping with the tape playing in the background. I would apparently rewind to the song, listen to it then rewind it again...over and over and over again.
I still love the song today, its such a pleasant, relaxing song and does not age. Children today still love the song and to me it is a classic. One day when I have my own kids I will introduce them to the song I played for hours 365 days a year ;-)
SONG 2
Band Aid - Do they know it's Christmas?
--------------------------------------- ----------
I was born 1st January 1985; I know a pretty awful day, completely overshadowed by a certain event called the New Year!
Many people believe that the song in the number one spot in the charts on the day you are born is your 'life anthem'.
Well I am sure this song needs little introduction but the day I was born over 22 years ago this song was number one. It has made a few re-entries to the charts since but the original will always be my special song I suppose. Regardless of my birthday I do like this one I believe it carries a particularly important message at Christmas.
SONG 1
Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody
---------------------------------------- ------
I think this song is absolutely amazing...I love it! It's one of those get up and go dancing songs. It is so upbeat and able to cheer anyone up. I helped at a local kids disco last week and the kids loved it. They play it in shops and I can't help sing along to it or tap my feet (rather embarrassingly)
I think the most worrying thing is that I know all the words and am not afraid to sing it. I listened to this one day and despite my depressed 'nothing will go right' and 'doom and gloom' attitude it had me singing and tapping my feet. I love the loud, yelled 'IT'S CHRISTMAS' half way through! In case we weren't already aware after 4 months of advertising!
It was actually really hard to choose my all time favourite by I have settled on the Merry Christmas Everybody song as it's a very jolly and cheerful song! I could have had any of the above though...these songs are the only ones that remain constant every year and I just can't get bored of them...well maybe by January the 1st I am ready to pack them away for a year!
Summary: Jingle Bells...jingle bells...jingle all the way!
