Advantages: Someone might 'discover' these too.

Disadvantages: I could only really pick 10.

This is very cool, I didn't know that this part of Dooyoo existed, so I have had a look at an old 'top 10' I did for Ciao (Ciao member name paulhanton), and realised that my tastes are fickle, though some songs are 'constants'.

I am really not too bothered if you rate this review, but go and have a listen to a few if you don't know them, you never know, you might end up liking them.

1. John Coltrane - My Favourite Things
This song is just audio ecstacy, I aspire and dream (and have dreamt) of playing this with the fluidity, passion and note perfect ease that he did. The man was a genius, he did things with a tenor saxophone that were heavenly. I listen to this at least a dozen times a week, often as I drift off to sleep, I would die happy with this tune in my ears. It is as far away from 'The Sound of Music' version as could be.

2. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight - The Jam
The futility of violence, masterful lyrics, the sound of the beat, in time perfectly with that of a tube train, and the imortal line "The last thing that I saw as I lay there on the floor was 'Jesus saves' written by an atheist nutter, and a British rail poster that said 'have an awayday, a cheap holiday, do it today". Had to have at least one Jam track in there. And what song in the late 70's could sum up the juxtaposition between middles classes embracing curry and wine, and working class bootboys?

3. Walk on the Wild Side - Lou Reed.
The lyrics rocked me when I first heard them and realised what they meant, the sadness and realism of the song, the saxophone solo, beautiful. And 'Holly' in the song was the inspiration for the stage name 'Holly' Johnson of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.

4. Rainy night in Soho -The Pogues.
What a tortured soul Shane McGowan is, and capable of such moving lyrics, every time I hear this, I am there, it is me and I love it. One of those songs that make my eyes water every time.

5. Dreaming - Back to The Planet.
Probably many of you will never have heard this, a crusty band on the festival scene in the late 80's & early 90's, great song, very 'poppy' for a band like this, the ultimate 'drift away' song. And, I fancied the lead singer in a big way.

6. Summertime - Charlie Parker
What John Coltrane was to tenor sax', Parker was to alto sax'. So many songs I could have chosen and this, for me, 'floats' above all, the speed, fluency and ease in which he played. I have heard this version of Summertime by Parker, probably hundreds of times, and it still tingles my nerve endings and makes me feel like jelly.

7. The Green Fields of France - The Furey Brothers.
If ever a song told a story of the needlessness of war this is it, the opening lines send a shiver down my spine every time. The story of young Willie MacBride and his demise in the war to end wars, except it didn't.

8. Carry me - The Levellers.
Student days, loved and still do love nearly all the old Levellers songs, this one stands out as an anthem, sweaty clubs, dogs on string, brew crew etc.

9. Mosh - Eminem
Just because it was so different from everything else he has ever done, and it was pretty brave to write and sing a song like that in post 911 America, great lyrics and real anger, way to go.

10. Oh no my last one.....Eeya Be - Elephant song - Baka Beyond (live), I love music from all over the world, especially fusion with an African twist, and this is the best, feel good, melodic song of it's genre.

What a shame that I cannot write my top 100 songs; LA woman - Doors, Mr Bojangles - Sammy Davies Junior, The Message - Grandmaster Flash - No Woman no Cry - Bob Marley, GI Blues - Carter's Unstoppable Sex Machine, STOP, I hear you cry, Paul.

Summary: My 10 favourite songs.
