Advantages: I love these songs!
Disadvantages: You might not have the same taste as me.
My favourite songs don't really have an order. I just like them :)
I could probably think of many more than 10 songs... But these are the 10 I came up with eventually!
1. Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley.
I loved this before it became the X Factor song, and I was terrified that whoever won the show was going to destory the song. I don't mind Alexandra's version, but I will always love Jeff Buckley's version the most. I've heard so many covers of this song, and nothing beats this version. The lyrics are beautiful, and the song just sounds amazing. I don't think I'll ever get sick of this song.
"Baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah"
2. Storm - Lifehouse.
I got introduced to Lifehouse by a friend of mine last year, and I think they are amazing. This song sounds sad, and to be honest, I'm at a loss as to whether it's about God, or a relationship, as I'm pretty sure I read that the Lifehouse boys are fairly religious. All their songs are so emotional, and this one gets to me a lot, I don't know why. I think part of it makes me think of people I know who have died... Either way, I love this song, and it can quite frequently make me cry.
"I know you didn't
bring me out here to drown
so why am I 10 feet under and upside down"
3. Don't Stop Me Now - Queen.
The first time I remember really paying attention to this song was when I heard it in Shaun Of The Dead. I love Queen, they are my Mum's favourite band of all time, so I was brought up with their music blaring in the background. This song always cheers me up, as it's so upbeat and just makes me smile. It always makes me think of the good times, and want to jump around.
"Tonight I'm gonna have myself a real good time
I feel alive and the world it's turning inside out Yeah!
I'm floating around in ecstasy
So don't stop me now don't stop me
'Cause I'm having a good time having a good time"
4. Cancer - My Chemical Romance.
This song means a lot to me, as I know a few people who have died of cancer, as well as a few who have survived. The lyrics are incredibly sad, and they always make me think when I listen to it. I've seen My Chemical Romance live twice, and the second time I saw them, I heard this and I actually cried. You could see emotion in the singers face, reflecting the song.
"Turn away
If you could get me a drink
Of water cause my lips are chapped and faded
Call my Aunt Marie"
5. How To Save A Life - The Fray
Once again, something which I cannot fathom the complete meaning of... I love this song though. I first heard it in an episode of Scrubs and thought it was beautiful. After that I went out and bought The Fray's album, and I still love this song. It sounds beautiful and emotional, and the video is sad as well.
"Let him know that you know best
Cause after all you do know best
Try to slip past his defense
Without granting innocence
Lay down a list of what is wrong
The things you've told him all along
And pray to God he hears you
And pray to God he hears you"
6. Scarlet - Brooke Fraser.
What is it with me and TV shows? I heard this on Neighbours, liked it, downloaded it, and it's still one of my favourite songs now. I think I watch too much tv... Anyway... This song is slow, sounding fairly acoustic, and is another beautiful song. With only the piano and her vocals, it sounds incredible, sad though.
"And this very moment
Of timid and fragile honesty
Is precious and rare
And fleeting"
7. Butterflies and Hurricanes - Muse.
I don't know why I love this song as much as I do. I used it in a drama piece recently, about abuse. It worked well. I Like the way it has such a contrast of speeding up, slowing down, piano music and fast guitars. I'd love to know what it means, but I just love this song.
"Best you've got to be the best
you've got to change the world
and use this chance to be heard
your time is now "
8. Run - Leona Lewis.
As much as I like the original Snow Patrol version, I completely love the Leona Lewis version. It sounds so emotional and pretty... I think her voice is amazing, and she can reach any note and it sounds wonderful. I heard the live lounge version a long time ago, and I'm so happy she decided to release it properly.
"I'll sing it
One last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing
That's right
In all I've done"
9. Mr. Brightside - The Killers.
I've always loved this song! It's repetitive, which usually annoys me in songs, but I really like it. I like the guitars and drums, and what sounds like pianos. I love Brandon Flowers' voice and I just love the way it all fits together. This never fails to make me jump around and smile. I saw The Killers at Reading Festival last year, and I was feeling rubbish and just wanted to go back to the tent, but I made myself wait for this song, and I instantly felt more awake and energetic because this song seems to do that to me!
"Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
Now my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress, now
Let me go"
10. Broken - Seether (feat. Amy Lee)
I originally heard the version of this song which featured Amy Lee. I think Amy Lee has an incredible voice, as well as Seether. It's a sad song, talks about people leaving, and how hard it is. The music sounds quite simple for most of it, and the lyrics are fairly powerful but not particularly interesting. I don't know what draws me to this song so much. Maybe I just love the way their voices sound together. I've loved this song since it first came out though.
"I wanted you to know I love the way you laugh
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain away
I keep your photograph; I know it serves me well
I wanna hold you high and steal your pain"
I love all these songs so much. Some of them I have a very lame explanation for, but they're songs which I don't think I'm ever going to get sick of, and I listen to all the time. Some cheer me up, some make me cry... But I think that's what songs are supposed to do - bring out emotions in you.
Summary: Songs that I'll love no matter what, and which get me through sometimes!
