Advantages: Beautiful, exciting, inspiring, soothing, searing...
Disadvantages: None.
After reading some Top 10 Songs reviews here I decided to compile my own.
But after thinking about it, I have not been able to choose my absolute favourite songs of all time - Music has always been an enormous part of my life, and there are far too many songs that I love and that are significant to me, for various reasons.
So, this being the case, I have instead compiled my TOP 10 SONGS OF THE MOMENT - The songs I would choose today if I could only pick ten.
For this reason too, I have also not ranked the songs, and so present them all equaly as my songs of choice.
I anticipate that some of my choices may be somewhat obscure.
To accompany each song I have included a sample of the lyrics and the link to a Youtube video featuring it, in case you are not familiar with it and would like to check it out.

Wuthering Heights - KATE BUSH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A one-off in every way. The melody is just extraordinary: eerie, slowly creeping up before it soars with fierce passion.
The version I like best is not the original that was released in 1978, but the one that was recorded for the greatest hits album "The Whole Story", which has much fuller and more powerful vocals.
The song was written by Kate Bush when she was 17, after watching a TV adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel.
"Too long I roamed in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to Wuthering, Wuthering
Wuthering Heights"
Black - PEARL JAM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Stone Gossard & Eddie Vedder]
A song of stunning beauty. From a man contemplating the void left by a relationship that has ended, it is a song about love, loss, regret, despair.
The band refused to release this song as a single, despite pressure from the record company, because of the personal nature of the song.
As there is no official video of this song, I give the link to the MTV UNPLUGGED performance.
"How quick the sun can, drop away
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass
Of what was everything
All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything"

I Drove All Night - ROY ORBINSON
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Written by: Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly]
Sung from the point of view of a lover who travelled a great distance to see his/her beloved. A beautiful blend of melody and passion.
It was written for Roy Orbinson, but his version was only released after the song had already been a hit for Cindy Lauper.
"No one can move me the way that you do
Nothing erases this feeling between me and you"
The Theme Tune of Les Mystérieuses Cites D'Or - JACQUES CARDONA
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Haim Saban & Shuky Levy]
LES MYSTERIEUSES CITES D'OR was an animated series that I watched when I was little.
The series' plot is set in the 16th century and follows three children who are searching for one of seven cities of gold in the New World, and it mixes ancient South American history and science fiction.
I was too young when the series first aired to remember the story, but the song was engraved in my memory, and I was so happy when I found it on Youtube that I nearly cried tears of joy (by 'nearly' I mean I blubbled like a baby, kissed the screen and cradled the laptop in my arms).
"Enfant du soleil
Tu parcours la terre, le ciel
Cherche ton chemin
C'est ta vie, c'est ton destin"
Unfortunately, all the high quality clips of the opening credits featuring the song are not accessible from the United Kingdom, but there is still a more pixelated version available as well as the end credits (same song, just different graphics).

I Don't Want To Live On The Moon - ERNIE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Jeff Moss]
There are many Sesame Street songs that I love, and this one is a very special one: a real Sesame Street Classic, with vocals by Jim Henson.
In the song Ernie expresses his desire of going to the moon, but he realises that he wouldn't want to stay there forever.
"Though I'd like to look down at the Earth from above
I would miss all the places and people I love
So although I might like it for one afternoon
I don't want to live on the moon"
Diamonds And Rust - VARIOUS ARTISTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Joan Baez]
In this song the singer is haunted by the memories of a past relationship that suddenly come flooding back.
The strength of this song lies in a great melody, that flows beautifully and is able to carry the rather verbose, if evocative, lyrics seemlessly.
The original, by Joan Baez, was released in 1975 and has an eerie melancholy to it. Then in 1977, Judas Priest gave it the metal treatment, and several other artists followed suit.
The video I have linked is of an outstanding, rocking live performance of the song.
"Now you're telling me you're not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it you who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
Because I need some of that vagueness now it's all come back too clearly
Yes I loved you dearly and if you're offering me diamonds and rust
I've already paid"

Here Comes Your Man - PIXIES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Frank Black]
The most widely-known and accessible PIXIES song, and there is a reason for it. It is exceedingly, unreasonably and unavoidably catchy.
Written by an adolescent Frank Black, apparently about homeless people riding trains and earthquakes. Whatever. It's a cracking tune, and that's all.
"Out by the box car waiting
Take me away to nowhere plains
There is a wait so long
You'll never wait so long"
Listen To The Bells - ANYTHING MUPPETS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
An ode to the joys and usefulness of bells of all kinds.
What can I say about this work of art? It's another vintage Sesame Street song, performed by the Anything Muppets, with Jim Henson voicing the lead Muppet.
I can only hope one day I will react to the alarm clock with as much enthusiasm as Anything Muppet and his friends.
"I was lying in my bed, I heard the alarm clock ring
The bell woke me up as quick as anything
I sure am glad the bell woke me up that way
'Cause otherwise I might have stayed asleep all day!"

Last Goodbye - JEFF BUCKLEY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Jeff Buckley]
A parting song. A relationship has come to an end, and the lover seeks 'closure' and deals with the couple's history together one last time before walking away for good.
From his album "Grace", this was Jeff Buckley's most successful single.
What I like about it is the sweeping melody, Jeff's voice and some inspired lyrics.
If you have never heard this song before, I suggest you check out the video below, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
"This is our last embrace
Must I dream and always see your face"
To You I Bestow - MUNDY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Mundy]
This is one song that most people will probably never have heard unless they are Irish (Mundy is from Ireland) or are familiar with Baz Luhrman's "Romeo + Juliet"'s soundtrack (it's on it).
Right now I have this song on repeat, and If I had numbered the songs on this list, this would have been Number 1.
This song belongs in a fairytale, not in the real world. Layers upon layers of sound combined to form one singular and beautiful melody.
Mundy's whimsical lyrics, sung in his raw, unsophisticated manner make this song truly unique.
The song has one of the most abrupt starts and noisiest endings ever, but from verse 3 to the last, it is a thing of unexpected beauty.
This song shines.
"And if you come back, I'll take you to the garden
We'll dance to an orchestra on the lawn
And we roll in the foggy dew
And dance with the ghosts upon the dawn
And on the dawn and on the dawn"
I have found no official video, and the fan-made videos with the "Romeo + Juliet" clips are distracting, and the audio is not of the best quality.
So I chose one with a stactic image but good quality audio.

That is it. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

P.S.: In case you are wondering... Yes, I love Sesame Street :P
